You’ll need:

  • 4 cups of French bread, cut into bite-size pieces and dried overnight
  • 3 eggs
  • ¾ cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon

PRO TIP:

French toast is definitely best when made with drier, stale bread. Make sure you are using day-old bread for this recipe.

SUBSTITUTIONS AND ADDITIONS

NUTS: You can also add pecans or walnuts to this baked French toast dish if you’d like.

ORANGES: Add orange zest to the batter for a delicious, irresistible flavor.

RAISINS: Now, I’ll be honest, I don’t personally love raisins, BUT some folks do, and this is definitely a recipe you can add them to!

BREAD: We like using French bread, but some folks love sourdough, brioche, or challah bread, so those are some options if you’d like to try them as well.

How to Make This Instant Pot French Toast

STEP ONE: To prepare the bread, cut the loaf into slices and then cut slices of bread into bite-size pieces. You can leave the bread pieces out on the counter on a baking sheet the night before making this dish. To make it faster, you can also place the bread cubes on a baking sheet and bake at 325°F for 20 to 25 minutes.

STEP TWO: Select an ovenproof dish that fits inside your Instant Pot. Spray the sides and bottom of the pan with nonstick baking spray. You can use parchment paper at the bottom, too, for easy release.

OUR RECIPE DEVELOPER SAYS

You can use the special pan made for Instant Pot if you have it or you can use another similar-sized pan.

STEP THREE: In a large bowl, whisk the eggs and then add the milk, vanilla, regular sugar, brown sugar, and cinnamon.

STEP FOUR: Add the dried bread pieces and push them down gently so that all the bread pieces are covered with the egg mixture. Let them soak for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally to make sure every piece of bread gets into the mixture.

STEP FIVE: Pour the mixture into your prepared dish. Cover the dish really well with foil.

PRO TIP:

I put a piece over the top and then also placed the dish on a piece of foil and brought the edges up around it. This helps seal out the moisture while it is steaming.

STEP SIX: Place your trivet that came with the Instant Pot in the bottom of the pot and pour 1 cup of water into the pot.

STEP SEVEN: Place your baking dish on top of the trivet.

STEP EIGHT: Place the lid on the Instant Pot and make sure the vent is turned to “seal”. Set to manual and pressure to high for 40 minutes.

STEP NINE: When the timer goes off, cover the vent with a towel and quick release the steam.

STEP TEN: Remove the dish carefully, as it will be hot, and remove the foil from the dish, draining off any excess moisture on the foil.

How to Serve

Our family loves melted butter, and maple syrup poured on top of this breakfast casserole. You could use a fruit sauce topping or fruit-based syrup for this instead. We also love it when I melt creamy peanut butter, or Nutella and drizzle it on top! Fresh dollops of whipped cream are another favorite.

Fresh fruit like blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, or bananas is a great choice on top. Sprinkle chocolate chips across the top before serving, or melt them in the microwave and drizzle over the top. A dash of powdered sugar is a classic topping that is also delicious on this Instant Pot French toast.

IN THE FRIDGE: Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container for 2 to 3 days and then reheated in the oven or in the microwave.

IN THE FREEZER: You can also store leftovers in the freezer in an airtight container for up to three months.
