Imagine biting into a smooth, creamy truffle that melts in your mouth, revealing a burst of tangy-sweet orange flavor.

The bold and zesty notes of orange pair perfectly with the rich, decadent chocolate coating.

The truffles are usually made with dark chocolate, which provides a nice balance to the juicy fruitiness of the orange.

You’ll need:

  • ⅔ cup plus 2 tablespoons of heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon of fresh orange zest (plus more for optional garnish)
  • 1½ teaspoons of pure orange extract
  • 1 (12-ounce) package of dark chocolate chips
  • ½ cup of granulated sugar (for rolling the truffles in)

Substitutions And Additions

CHOCOLATE CHIPS: You can substitute a different kind of chocolate chip. Try milk chocolate or semi-sweet chocolate chips instead of dark chocolate chips in this simple recipe.

SUGAR: You can substitute cocoa powder, powdered sugar, or sanding sugar to roll the finished truffles in.

How To Make This Chocolate Orange Truffles Recipe

These little bite-sized treats will come together quickly with a few simple ingredients. Here’s how to make them.

STEP ONE: Add the heavy cream to a medium-sized microwave-safe bowl.

STEP TWO: Heat the cream for 1 minute in the microwave.

You can also heat the heavy cream on the stovetop in a small saucepan rather than in the microwave.

STEP THREE: Whisk in the orange zest and orange extract.

STEP FOUR: Add the dark chocolate chips to the cream mixture, and stir until the chocolate is completely melted and incorporated. You can return the bowl to the microwave and heat it in 15-second intervals if the mixture is not warm enough to completely melt the chocolate.

STEP FIVE: Once the melted chocolate mixture is smooth, cover the bowl with plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for 30 to 35 minutes. This will chill the chocolate enough to be molded.

PRO TIP:

If the truffle mixture is too warm, it will not form into balls properly. Make sure you don’t skimp on the time in the fridge for this step.

STEP SIX: Use a 1-tablespoon cookie scoop or a tablespoon to scoop out the orange truffle mixture.

PRO TIP:

Using a small cookie scoop would give you uniform balls and the size you want for these truffles.

STEP SEVEN: Roll truffles in the granulated sugar to thoroughly coat.

STEP EIGHT: Place chocolate truffles on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or wax paper. Chill in the refrigerator until you are ready to serve.
