You’ll need:

  • 1 (14-ounce or 396-gram) can sweetened condensed milk

  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups cold heavy cream

Ice Cream with Nutella Substitutions and Additions

This ice cream and Nutella recipe is versatile, and if you need to swap ingredients to customize your recipe, you can.

SWEETENED CONDENSED MILK: For a dairy-free alternative, swap the sweetened condensed milk with a can of sweetened, coconut condensed milk. This will add a subtle coconut flavor to the ice cream, but it may give it a slightly different texture.

MIX-INS: Try adding chopped nuts like almonds, pecans, or hazelnuts for extra crunch and texture.

VANILLA EXTRACT: Infuse your ice cream with different flavors by swapping vanilla extract with other extracts such as almond, coconut, or mint. Each extract adds its own unique aroma and taste, providing endless possibilities for flavor customization.

HEAVY CREAM: Replace heavy cream with an equal amount of chilled coconut cream for a dairy-free option. Coconut cream offers a rich and creamy texture, perfect for achieving a similar consistency to traditional ice cream.

Remember that adding or substituting ingredients may change the flavor and texture of the ice cream. Add or replace ingredients slowly and adjust quantities as necessary.

How To Make Nutella Ice Cream

Whether you’re a Nutella aficionado or simply craving a cool indulgence, you can make this no churn Nutella ice cream without an ice cream maker! With just a handful of simple ingredients and a few easy steps, you can whip up a batch of this luscious treat to satisfy your chocolate and hazelnut cravings anytime.

STEP ONE: Start by assembling all the ingredients required for this delectable treat. Make sure your sweetened condensed milk, Nutella, vanilla extract, salt, and heavy cream are all ready and at the appropriate temperatures. Measuring out the ingredients beforehand to make the processes easier and smoother.

PRO TIP: Make sure your heavy cream is very cold when you begin.

STEP TWO: Set a large mixing bowl, whisk (or beaters), and a loaf pan in the freezer for at least 30 minutes. Make sure they’re adequately chilled before you begin.

PRO TIP: Line your loaf pan with plastic wrap before freezing to make the ice cream easy to remove from the pan once it’s set.

STEP THREE: Once your equipment is properly chilled, it’s time to begin. In a separate, medium-sized mixing bowl, combine the sweetened condensed milk, ¾ cup of Nutella, vanilla extract, and salt. Whisk until the mixture is smooth and well combined. Remember to reserve ¼ cup of Nutella.

STEP FOUR: Remove the mixing bowl and beaters from the freezer. Measure the cold, heavy cream into the mixing bowl and use an electric mixer on medium-high to whip the cream. When stiff peaks form, the whipped cream is ready.

STEP FIVE: Use a rubber spatula to add THE whipped cream about one cup at a time to the Nutella mixture in batches. Carefully fold the mixtures together. You want to make sure the whipped cream fully incorporates into the Nutella mixture, but you don’t want to deflate the air in the whipped cream.

STEP SIX: Remove the metal pan from the freezer and evenly spoon the ice cream mixture into the pan. Smooth the top with the back of a spoon and cover the pan with aluminum foil. Place the pan back in the freezer for 2 hours.

STEP SEVEN: Remove the pan from the freezer and dollop 3 heaping tablespoons of the remaining Nutella onto the top. Use a knife to swirl the Nutella into the partially frozen ice cream.

STEP EIGHT: Use a spoon to drizzle the rest of the Nutella on the top of the ice cream. There should be about 1 tablespoon left over to drizzle. Cover the pan with foil and return it to the freezer for another 3 hours. If your house is on the warmer side, you might need to freeze the ice cream for an extra 1-2 hours. Scoop the ice cream into bowls or ice cream cones. Serve immediately and enjoy!
