This beer bread recipe yields an easy quick bread that is flavored with your favorite kind of beer. Baking bread doesn’t get much easier because there’s no kneading or yeast, and the best part of all, no rising time, and you end up with a finished product that has a delicious buttery crust and amazing flavor!
Beer Bread Ingredients
There’s something special about homemade bread, and beer bread takes things up a notch.
With its fluffy texture and subtle tang, it’s the perfect bread to accompany a hearty winter meal or to serve up as a snack with butter.
The yeast in the beer adds an extra depth of flavor that really rounds out each bite without being too overpowering.
You’ll need:
- 3 cups of all-purpose flour sifted
- 3 teaspoons of baking powder
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- ¼ cup of sugar
- 12 ounces of beer, light in color
- ⅓ cup of salted butter, melted
PRO TIP:
You can adjust the flavor of this bread based on the type of beer you use.
Substitutions And Additions
BEER: Because the beer you use in your beer bread recipe will have a significant effect on the loaf you make, choose a beer that matches your tastes. A light-bodied beer will make bread with a lighter flavor compared to a dark beer or stout. Some suggestions are:
- Guinness is for stout lovers
- If you’re an IPA (India pale ale) lover, use Harpoon IPA
- Pabst Blue Ribbon is good for those who like a lager
- Brown ale lovers should try Newcastle
- If you like Belgian beer, Golden Monkey from Victory Brewing Company is the one for your bread
- Oarsman Ale from Bell’s Brewery is the best for sour beer lovers
CHEESE: Take this basic beer bread to the next level by mixing cheddar cheese into the bread batter before transferring it to the pan.
How To Make This Beer Bread Recipe
The fantastic part of making this bread is that you don’t have to give it time to rise on the counter. You just mix up the dough, pop it in the oven and bake.
OUR RECIPE DEVELOPER SAYS
This homemade beer bread recipe will make one loaf, but you could always double or triple it to make more.
STEP ONE: Preheat the oven to 375°F and spray a 9×5-inch loaf pan with cooking spray or line it with parchment paper.
STEP TWO: Sift flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar into a large bowl.
PRO TIP:
Sifting the flour is the most important part of this whole recipe. The bread will be lighter and airier if sifted. If not sifted, then it will be a denser bread.
STEP THREE: Pour the beer into the bowl with the dry ingredients. Stir to combine. The mixture will be sticky.
STEP FOUR: Transfer the bread mixture to the greased loaf pan. Use a spoon to spread the bread mixture out to the edges while leaving it somewhat uneven on the top to give it a more rustic bread look when it’s done cooking.
STEP FIVE: Pour melted butter over the bread mixture and place in the preheated oven. Bake uncovered for 45-55 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean or with only a few crumbs.
PRO TIP:
Check the bread at 45 minutes of cook time. If it is too brown on the top, cover with aluminum foil for the remaining 10 minutes.
STEP SIX: Remove from the oven and let the bread cool for 10 minutes. Serve with butter, honey, and jam.
PRO TIP:
The top of the loaf will be buttery and crunchy after it’s done cooking.
How To Serve
There are so many delicious things that you can serve with homemade beer bread. A bowl of soup or chili goes particularly well to help you mop up all the liquid. Our favorite soups include this hamburger soup and crack chicken noodle soup!
Any kind of dips and spreads go well with homemade beer bread. I particularly like hot buffalo chicken dip or spinach artichoke dip.

Storing This Beer Quick Bread
Keep a loaf of this delicious bread on hand for your next hearty meal. Here’s how.
ON THE COUNTER: You can keep your homemade bread fresh for a few days when sealed in plastic wrap and stored at room temperature.
IN THE FREEZER: Beer bread can be frozen if you want to keep it for longer and don’t intend to eat it right away.
When you freeze beer bread, I recommend that you slice it first. Once you have cut the beer bread up, place baking paper between the slices, so they don’t freeze together. The best way to freeze this loaf is to wrap it in plastic wrap and place it in a plastic freezer bag to keep it extra fresh.
This easy beer bread recipe uses beer to create a fluffy loaf with a delicious texture. Something so novel but so tasty will surprise and impress all your guests, whether they are beer lovers or not. This just might become your new favorite quick bread!

I live in Australia, our bottle sizes are different to the USA.
Could you please clarify the size of the bottle of beer, how many mills or ounces?
Thank you, OB

No problem – 11.53oz or 341 ml for the beer. Hope you enjoy 🙂

If I use gluten flour that is not self rising, how would I incorporate yeast?

I’m thinking I would taste 3 tbsp sugar in the bread. Does the sugar need to be in there to make the recipe work?

I only have all purpose flour not self rising as far as I can tell. Will that work in this receipe for the 3 ingredient Beer Bread receipe?
Layne Kangas says
I would suggest adding 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon salt to each cup of all purpose flour to make it self rising for your recipe to work best! 🙂 Enjoy!
Betty says
What is a cup measurement in grams please

I just spotted the bread recipe today and I want to make it. I want to make a second version by adding some grated cheddar. I figure 1 cup should work. That is a future experiment. It would be great with chilli.

Hi. I and my grandson love bread. Can this recipe be made to taste salty and buttery instead of sweet?
Layne Kangas says
I haven’t tried it another way, so I am not sure – I love the flavor of this bread, it’s not overly sweet and tastes delicious with butter on it!
Roy says
Can this bread be made in a bread machine?
Layne Kangas says
I have never tried doing it in my machine. It’s really easy to do this one without and I’m not sure if it would turn out as good in the machine!

I make mine with pumpkin head beer and cinnamon in the fall and citrus ale and orange/line zest in the spring. Very tasty and easy.

I added a hand full of Carolina Reaper and cheddar cheese with a few pickled jalapeños and fresh serranos. This is a quick, easy and tasty bread.

This bread was delicious. I had leftover beer from making chili and I wanted to use it up. I’m glad I did sift the flour because it rose beautifully. I served some with the chili, which was amazing together, and the leftovers topped with butter and honey. I will absolutely make this again. Great recipe.
