With this old-fashioned hot fudge sundae cake, you can easily enjoy a dessert that has the feel of a sundae but there’s also cake involved. The pudding-like texture of the cake is the perfect base for a scoop of your favorite ice cream and toppings.

Hot Fudge Sundae Cake Ingredients

You’ll need:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup cocoa powder, divided
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ½ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1¾ cups hot water

SUBSTITUTIONS AND ADDITIONS

NUTS: You can add chopped nuts to the batter along with the chocolate chips for extra crunch. Or if you prefer, simply sprinkle some over the top once the cake is baked.

How To Make This Hot Fudge Sundae Cake Recipe

STEP ONE: Preheat the oven to 350°F.

STEP TWO: In an 8 x 8 glass baking dish, mix together flour, ¼ cup cocoa powder, granulated sugar, and baking powder.

STEP THREE: Mix in milk, butter, and vanilla extract until a thick batter forms.

STEP FOUR: Stir in chocolate chips and spread the batter evenly in the baking dish.

STEP FIVE: Combine the remaining ¼ cup of cocoa powder and brown sugar and sprinkle it over the batter.

STEP SIX: Pour hot water over the top of all of the ingredients.

STEP SEVEN: Bake for 40 minutes or until the cake has formed a dry top and a bubbly, pudding-like bottom.

PRO TIP:

The cake is supposed to have a pudding-like bottom so don’t worry if the bottom of your cake is not a cake-like texture when it is finished baking.

STEP EIGHT: Remove the cake from the oven.

STEP NINE: Serve the warm cake with a scoop of ice cream if desired. Top with whipped cream, hot fudge topping, and a cherry!
