A buttery nipple shot is a creamy and indulgent drink with an intensely sweet flavor. The butterscotch schnapps and Irish cream flavors create a smooth taste with hints of caramel and vanilla.

It’s not overly strong or alcoholic tasting, making it an excellent choice for those who don’t usually enjoy hard liquor. This buttery nipples shot recipe is sure to be a hit with those who want something sweet and enjoyable.

You’ll need:

  • 1 ounce of butterscotch schnapps, chilled
  • ½ ounce of Baileys original Irish cream liqueur, chilled

PRO TIP:

You want to be sure that your butterscotch schnapps and Baileys Irish cream liqueur are very cold. This makes these buttery nipple shots taste so much better when they are chilled. Since no ice is added, you will need to refrigerate your bottles for at least 12-24 hours before making these shots. You can also chill your shot glass if desired.

Substitutions And Additions

BAILEYS IRISH CREAM: There are many other brands of Irish cream liqueur at the liquor store that will work just as well as Baileys. Try Saint Brendan’s, Five Farms, Carolans, or Ryan’s.

BUTTERSCOTCH SCHNAPPS: There are quite a few brands of butterscotch schnapps on the market, the DeKuyper brand being the most commonly found, but you will want to use the brand you prefer best. Remember that this buttery nipple cocktail shot only contains two ingredients, so you want to use good-quality brands for the best results.

How To Make This Buttery Nipple Shot Recipe

This layered shot is simple to make since it only needs two simple ingredients. With a little bit of fancy pouring, you’ll have a tasty drink to serve in no time.

Follow our step-by-step instructions below.

OUR RECIPE DEVELOPER SAYS

You can increase this easy shot recipe for as many people as you want to serve. I suggest if you are making more than one, then you add the butterscotch liqueur to all the shot glasses and then add the Irish cream layer to each shot glass.

STEP ONE: You will need a 1½-ounce shot glass and a cocktail stirring spoon.

PRO TIP:

When choosing your shot glass, be sure it will hold at least 1½ ounces which is a standard size. I like to use the taller, more narrow, and heavy-bottomed, shooter-style clear shot glass for this slippery nipple shot, as I think the layers look prettier and more substantial. Any 1½ ounce-capacity shot glass will work, though.

STEP TWO: First, you will pour the chilled butterscotch schnapps liqueur into your chilled shot glass.

STEP THREE: Next, holding the cocktail stirring spoon with the bottom side facing up, hold it at a slight angle right at the inside edge of the shot glass just above the butterscotch schnapps.

PRO TIP:

If you do not have a cocktail stirring spoon, you can use a small dinnerware teaspoon, and it will work just the same. Using the back of the spoon helps disperse the Irish cream liqueur so that it is not a steady stream when poured, which may make the two liquids combine. If you want to skip the spoon altogether, that is fine. It will not have as pretty of a layered look, but it will still taste delicious (like a hard butterscotch candy).

STEP FOUR: Slowly pour the chilled Baileys Irish cream liqueur into the center of the flipped-over spoon so it carefully flows into the shot glass. You want to pour very slowly so that the two layers do not mix as best as possible.

PRO TIP:

It may be easier to pour your ½ ounce of Baileys Irish cream into a second shot glass to help you to pour it steadily over the spoon. I find that if I am pouring from a measuring jigger, then I tend to spill.

STEP FIVE: Finally, you will want to drink your buttery nipple shot all at once. This is not a drink that is meant to be sipped.

How To Serve

Buttery nipple shots are best served as a pre-drink cocktail before heading to the main course.

However, it can also be served as an after-dinner drink or dessert. Since this is a sweeter shot, it pairs well with desserts like chocolate cake or brownie cupcakes or even with some salty snacks like chips and dip

This is not the only delicious drink recipe we have for you to enjoy. Try our Reese cup shot and cinnamon toast crunch shot too.

Storage

IN THE FRIDGE/FREEZER: These shots are meant to be enjoyed immediately and won’t stay in the fridge or freezer for any length of time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this dessert shot ahead of time and keep it in a container in the fridge?

We don’t recommend storing this creamy drink in the fridge. Make it right when you are ready to drink it.

Do I have to chill the alcohol before making this layered drink?

For best results, we highly recommend chilling the schnapps and Irish cream as well as the shot glass.

Can I use a different brand of Irish cream?

There are plenty of brands of Irish cream available besides Baileys. Any brand you have on hand or can find at the liquor store will work fine in this buttery nipple recipe.
