What’s the Secret?

I use Malibu coconut rum specifically here. The coconut flavor is what gives this blue ocean drink recipe its tropical depth.

Many recipes use a plain vodka or white rum, will work in a pinch, but you’ll notice the difference. This drink is no where near as satisfying without the Malibu rum.

Some other tips:

Keep the blue curaçao to ½ oz. It’s tempting to add more for a deeper color, but too much makes it overly sweet and syrupy. Half an ounce gives you that beautiful blue without overpowering the pineapple.

I prefer 100% pineapple juice, not a pineapple juice cocktail. I’ve tried it both ways, and the added sugars in juice cocktails tend to throw the whole flavor balance off.

Add the Sprite last and directly into the glass, never in the shaker. The carbonation creates those white foam caps on top that make this drink look as good as it tastes.”

You’ll need:

  • 1½ ounces of Malibu coconut rum
  • 1 ounce of 100% pineapple juice
  • ½ ounce of blue curacao liqueur
  • ½ cup of lemon-lime soda (Sprite)

Other supplies:

  • Ice
  • Tall glass
  • Straw
  • Jigger or shot glass (to measure the alcohol)
  • Shaker

Substitutions And Additions

LEMON LIME SODA: Any brand of lemon-lime soda will work in this ocean water cocktail recipe. We used Sprite.

Lemon-lime soda is not the same as lemon-lime sparkling water. The soda has added sugars which adds to the flavor of this drink.

You can use a diet soda and it won’t change the flavor.

BLUE CURACAO: Blue curacao is an orange-flavored liqueur, not a berry flavor. It tastes like a clear or orange-flavored curacao. It is similar in flavor to triple-sec.

This is why it works well with the pineapple and coconut flavors in this delicious drink.

How To Make This Blue Ocean Drink Recipe

This yummy drink comes together in a few minutes in a cocktail shaker. Add the mixture to the cocktail glass with ice and start sipping.

STEP ONE: Fill a 15-ounce capacity daiquiri or hurricane glass ¾ full with crushed ice (approximately 1-1½ cups).

STEP TWO: In a cocktail shaker with ice, add the Malibu coconut rum, 100% pineapple juice, and blue curacao. Shake for 15 to 20 seconds.

STEP THREE: Strain the blue ocean drink into the prepared cocktail glass.

OUR RECIPE DEVELOPER SAYS

Make sure to strain your drink after shaking it in the cocktail shaker. This will help catch any small chunks of ingredients left over from shaking and give your drink a smoother texture.

STEP FOUR: Top your blue ocean drink with Sprite.

PRO TIP:

Impress the person you are making this tasty drink for (if not yourself) as you add the Sprite because it makes your blue ocean drink look like there are white caps from the wave on top of their drink. This is from the carbonation being added at the end.

I do not suggest adding lemon-lime soda to the cocktail shaker as you may make a mess from the expanding carbonated soda. You can skip the cocktail shaker and add ingredients to your crushed ice-filled glass in the order written. You will just need to give your drink a little stir before serving.

STEP FIVE: Add a straw and cocktail umbrella for garnish and serve.

Our fish bowl drink is another fun water-themed adult beverage, while one of our non-alcoholic blue drinks, our blue lagoon mocktail, is the ideal choice to serve to all ages.

Storage

IN THE FRIDGE: This easy cocktail needs to be enjoyed immediately. It won’t keep for any length of time in the fridge.

IN THE FREEZER: We don’t recommend freezing this beach water cocktail. It is best made fresh.

This blue ocean drink is the perfect summer cocktail that combines a tropical vibe with a beautiful blue hue. Not only does it have an irresistible coconut flavor, but it also has the refreshing taste of fruit and citrus.

Bright and citrusy with a clean finish, this stands out in both color and flavor, and you can browse more on my drink recipes page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this drink in a large pitcher?

We’d recommend that even if you are serving several people, it is best to make this fruity drink in individual glasses so that they each get the effect of the waves from adding the soda.

What is the best glass to use for this ocean water drink recipe?

We like the size of a hurricane glass or a daiquiri glass for this cocktail.

Can I make this drink ahead of time?

This alcoholic beverage won’t keep well as the ice will melt and water it down, and the soda will lose its fizz. It is best to make it right when you are ready to enjoy it.
