OUR RECIPE DEVELOPER SAYS

You could get all the wieners wrapped in the crescent dough and onto the baking sheet ahead of time.

Cover in plastic wrap and store in the fridge for up to 24 hours.

Brush with the garlic butter and bake when you are ready to serve them.

STEP ONE: Preheat the oven to 375°F. You can line your baking pan with parchment paper for easier clean up.

STEP TWO: Roll out the crescent roll dough and cut each of the eight triangles into three smaller triangles. You’ll end up with 24 small triangles.

Using the perforated lines in the dough makes it easy to cut.

PRO TIP:

A pizza cutter makes cutting the crescent dough easy!

STEP THREE: Roll a cocktail wiener into each triangle. Start rolling at the largest side of the triangle and end at the smallest side.

STEP FOUR: Place crescents at least two inches apart on the baking sheet.

STEP FIVE: In a small bowl, stir together melted butter and garlic powder. Spoon evenly over each crescent.

Some people prefer to use an egg wash for these crescent dogs, but I like the added flavor that the seasoned butter provides.

STEP SIX: Sprinkle salt over each.

STEP SEVEN: Bake for 12-15 minutes or until crescents have started to lightly brown.

PRO TIP:

Oven temperatures vary and may need to be recalibrated periodically to ensure they are accurate. Make sure to check your pigs in a blanket at the lower end of the recommended baking time.

Pigs in Blankets Substitutions and Additions

These little piggies are the perfect quick snack and there are so many options for how to make them. Try a creative twist to take these mini pigs to the next level!

Crescent Rolls: While there are other brands of crescent rolls out there, I have found that none work quite as well for this homemade pigs in a blanket recipe as the Pillsbury brand does!

Instead of the buttery crescent rolls, you could also experiment with using puff pastry, biscuit dough, or homemade dough. Just be sure to roll it out and cut into long strips like the crescent rolls if you try one of these.

Hot Dogs: You can substitute six regular full-sized hot dogs cut into quarters in place of the small cocktail sausages for this easy recipe.

You could also use spicy sausage links or cheddar lil smokies for additional flavors.

Cheese: Feel free to experiment with different types of cheese for a new flavor profile.

Sharp cheddar adds a nice bite, while pepper jack cheese can bring a little heat. Classic American cheese is a traditional favorite.

Mustard for Dipping: Swap out traditional yellow mustard for honey mustard, Dijon mustard, or even a spicy brown mustard to change up the dipping experience.

Each type of mustard brings its own unique flavor, complementing the savory taste of the mini smokies.

Sesame Seeds: Sprinkling sesame seeds on top before baking adds a delightful crunch and a nutty flavor.

You could also try poppy seeds, or for a more adventurous twist, everything bagel seasoning for an extra burst of flavor.

Herbs and Spices: Adding a sprinkle of garlic powder, paprika, red pepper flakes, or Italian seasoning to the dough before rolling can enhance the overall taste.

These spices add depth and can be adjusted according to personal preference.

For best results, you’ll probably want to use unsalted butter for these mini franks.

How to serve Crescent Roll Pigs in a Blanket

Crescent roll pigs in a blanket are a classic party appetizer that shows up at almost every event and always disappears fast.

Serve it with all of your favorite dipping sauces to make your guests happy. Try our honey mustard sauce and Carolina mustard BBQ sauce for two favorites. Copycat Chick Fil A sauce, or homemade ranch dressing, as well as ketchup are more popular choices.

For a spicy mayo option, try our homemade Alabama white sauce.

Our stuffed mushrooms and cheese sticks would be great recipes to serve along with the pigs in a blanket.

A couple more of our meaty appetizers that are always a hit include these crockpot little smokies and grape jelly meatballs.

While these are a favorite snack, you could make these part of a quick dinner by serving with a simple Caeser salad and French fries.

Pigs in Blankets Recipe storage tips

IN THE FRIDGE: Store leftover pigs in a blanket in the fridge in an airtight container for three to four days.

IN THE FREEZER: Leftover pigs in a blanket freeze beautifully, and all you need to do to freeze them is allow them to cool to room temperature, then transfer them to an airtight, freezer-safe container or a freezer-safe bag.

Don’t forget to label the Ziploc bag with the best-by date.

How to Reheat This Pigs in a Blanket Recipe

After storing this fun little appetizer, you’ve got several options for reheating.

Oven Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F. This temperature is ideal for reheating without burning or drying out the pigs in a blanket.
  2. Place the pigs in a blanket on a baking sheet. If you have a wire rack, place it on the baking sheet and then put the pigs in a blanket on the rack. This allows for even heating.
  3. Heat for about ten minutes. Check them at around eight minutes to ensure they are not getting too brown. They should be warm throughout and the pastry should be slightly crisp.

Microwave Method

  1. Use a microwave-safe plate and place a paper towel underneath the pigs in a blanket to absorb excess moisture.
  2. Heat in short intervals, about 15-20 seconds each, checking in between. Be cautious as overheating can make the pastry tough and the hot dogs rubbery.

Toaster Oven

  1. Set the toaster oven to 350°F or on a ‘reheat’ setting if available.
  2. Place the pigs in a blanket in the toaster oven and heat for about five to eight minutes. Check frequently to ensure they are not overheating.

Air Fryer

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 350°F if it has a preheat setting.
  2. Place them in the air fryer basket in a single layer and don’t overcrowd. Heat for three to five minutes. This method can add a nice crispness to the pastry.

Tips for Reheating Pigs in a Blanket

  • Avoid Overheating: This can dry out the pastry and change the texture of the hot dogs.
  • No Need to Thaw: If they are frozen, there’s no need to thaw them. Just add a few extra minutes to the reheating time.
  • Covering: If using an oven, you can cover them with aluminum foil to prevent them from getting too brown.

Pigs in Blanket FAQs

Can I make this recipe ahead of time?

When it comes to entertaining, make-ahead recipes can be a lifesaver. You can easily make these pigs in a blanket the night before, and bake and serve them the next day.

How many pigs in blankets per person?

Typically, you’ll want to plan for 4-6 per person. However, this number can fluctuate based on a few factors. If pigs in a blanket are the main course, aim for 6-8 per person, but if they’re an appetizer, 3-4 should be good.

How do you keep pigs in a blanket warm without getting soggy?

One effective method is to place the cooked treats on a parchment-lined baking sheet, loosely cover with foil, and then put them in a warm oven (around 200-250°F) until serving time. Alternatively, using a baking rack on a sheet pan allows for better air circulation, helping to keep them crispy.
