With a boozy kick from dark rum and vanilla vodka, a hint of nutmeg adds a spicy note, while a dollop of whipped cream balances the flavors with sweetness.

These jello shots capture the essence of holiday eggnog in a fun and indulgent way, making them a perfect addition to any celebration.

You’ll need:

  • 1 cup of eggnog
  • 2 packets of unflavored gelatin
  • ½ cup of dark rum
  • ¼ cup of vanilla vodka
  • ½ teaspoon of nutmeg
  • Whipped cream

PRO TIP:

I usually serve our simple Jello shots in mini 2-ounce cups with lids. If you can’t find the ones with lids, any small plastic shot glasses would also work.

Substitutions And Additions

EGGNOG: You can use store-bought eggnog, or if you have a preferred homemade eggnog recipe, you could use it for these eggnog jello shots.

VODKA: If you already have an unflavored vodka, you can substitute it for the vanilla vodka and just add one teaspoon of vanilla extract to your liquids.

WHIPPED CREAM: You can either make your own homemade whipped cream, use the store-bought whipped cream in the spray can, or add a scoop of Cool Whip on top.

DARK RUM: For a non-alcoholic alternative or if you prefer a different flavor, consider using rum extract or rum flavoring.

Start with a small amount and adjust to your taste to avoid overwhelming the recipe with a strong alcohol substitute.

NUTMEG: To switch up the spice profile, try using cinnamon or pumpkin spice instead of nutmeg.

These spices can add a different warmth and depth to your jello shots while maintaining that cozy holiday feel.

How To Make This Eggnog Jello Shots Recipe

Let’s dive into combining the eggnog with the gelatin, rum, and vodka to create the perfect texture for these shots.

STEP ONE: Pour your eggnog into a small saucepan and sprinkle gelatin over the surface of the eggnog; allow the gelatin to bloom for five minutes.

STEP TWO: Bring the mixture up to a simmer over medium heat.

STEP THREE: Remove the eggnog from the heat and allow it to cool for ten minutes.

OUR RECIPE DEVELOPER SAYS

Allow the dissolved gelatin mixture to cool slightly before adding the vodka. This will prevent the alcohol from boiling out, resulting in weaker shots.

Pouring the eggnog mixture into a separate container will allow the mixture enough time to cool to a sufficient temperature and make it easier to pour into your individual shot glasses!

STEP FOUR: Stir in the rum, vodka, and half the nutmeg.

STEP FIVE: Pour the eggnog-rum mixture into 2-ounce cups. Place the caps on the cups and place them in the fridge for two hours until the jello sets.

STEP SIX: Top with whipped cream and a sprinkle of nutmeg.

PRO TIP:

You could also add festive green and red sprinkles to the top of your whipped cream to make this treat extra colorful.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do these jello shots end up with a jello texture like classic jello shots?

With the gelatin, they get that jello texture, but they have more of a creamy texture from the eggnog.

There were some lumps in the eggnog after cooking. Is that okay?

That is okay. It just means some of that gelatin didn’t absorb the liquid. As long as it’s not a large clump, it will be fine. If it’s a very large clump, try to smush it with a rubber spatula, then stir it up.

Do any other liquors work in these jello treats?

You can use any liquor that you would normally find in eggnog. Some of the most popular are spiced rum, bourbon, and brandy.

How long in advance can I make these Christmas jello shots?

Don’t make these any more than four days in advance. After that, they start to get a build-up of condensation on top.
