Substitutions And Additions For Meatball Salisbury Steak

MUSTARD: You can substitute stone-ground mustard for the Dijon or plain prepared mustard in the meat mixture. Whichever you have on hand will work for these Salisbury meatballs.

SPICE: If you want a rich brown color to your gravy, you can add 1 teaspoon of Kitchen Bouquet to darken it. While optional, it adds a little something extra to your gravy if you have it on hand.

STEP TWO: Add breadcrumbs, diced onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, Dijon mustard, minced garlic, onion powder, kosher salt, and cracked black pepper.

Mix with either a large spoon or use your hands to mix the ingredients until thoroughly combined.

OUR RECIPE DEVELOPER SAYS

If you choose to mix the meat with your bare hands, I highly recommend using disposable gloves.

That way, you reduce the risk of cross-contamination, and it’s a lot less messy.

STEP THREE: Measure out 1½-tablespoon scoops of the meatball mixture. Form into round balls.

PRO TIP:

I do highly recommend having a dedicated scoop for meatballs. There is always a risk of cross-contamination.

Be sure to clearly mark the scoop for anyone to recognize.

STEP FOUR: Add the extra virgin olive oil to a 12-inch nonstick skillet over medium-high heat.

PRO TIP:

If you use a 10-inch skillet, you will need to cook the meatballs in batches.

STEP FIVE: Once the skillet is heated, add the meatballs to the skillet. Cook for 3 to 5 minutes per side, and turn to ensure even browning.

Once the meatballs are completely cooked, remove them from the heat and prepare the gravy according to the package directions.
