A handful of ingredients combine to make a frozen treat that you will find impossible to resist enjoying another spoonful.

You’ll skip the egg yolks and electric ice cream maker for this delicious treat.

This homemade ice cream gets its luscious texture thanks to the heavy cream and condensed milk in the mixture, and mini chocolate chips provide bursts of chocolaty goodness.

You’ll need these simple ingredients:

  • 1 (14-ounce or 396-gram) can of sweetened condensed milk
  • 2 teaspoons of pure vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon of table salt
  • 2 cups of cold heavy cream
  • 1 cup of mini chocolate chips

Homemade Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Substitutions and Additions

This popular ice cream flavor is so easy to make at home. You’ll skip the ice cream shop or store-bought ice cream after just one bite.

Plus, there are plenty of customization options:

FLAVOR EXTRACTS: Experiment with different flavor extracts for a unique twist.

Try peppermint extract for a refreshing mint chocolate chip ice cream or almond extract for an almond chocolate chip variation.

COLOR: Add some drops of green food coloring along with real mint extract to create mint chip ice cream.

CHOCOLATE CHIPS: Instead of mini chocolate chips, use chopped dark chocolate, milk chocolate, white chocolate, or even peanut butter chips for a different flavor profile.

If you love extra chocolate ice cream, you could even add large chocolate chunks before freezing or on top when you serve.

NUTS: Add chopped nuts like pecans, walnuts, or almonds for a crunchy and nutty dimension to your ice cream.

COOKIE PIECES: Crumble your favorite cookies, such as chocolate chip cookies or Oreos, and mix them into the ice cream for a cookie and cream variation.

MILK ALTERNATIVES: If you’re lactose intolerant or prefer a dairy-free option, substitute the sweetened condensed milk with sweetened condensed coconut milk or almond milk.

CARAMEL SWIRL: Drizzle caramel sauce between layers of ice cream for a caramel-chocolate chip combo.

FRUIT SWIRL: Swirl in fruit preserves like raspberry or strawberry for a fruity twist. This works especially well with dark chocolate chips.

TOASTED COCONUT: Toasted coconut flakes add a tropical flair and extra crunch to your ice cream.

MARSHMALLOW FLUFF: Mix in marshmallow fluff for a gooey and sweet marshmallow-chocolate chip treat.

COFFEE OR ESPRESSO: For coffee lovers, dissolve instant coffee or espresso powder in a small amount of hot water and blend it into the ice cream base for a mocha chocolate chip flavor.

PEPPERMINT CANDY: Crushed peppermint candies or candy canes can be mixed into the ice cream for a festive and refreshing twist.

How To Make This Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Recipe

Let’s get started by mixing up the ingredients before popping the ice cream pan into the freezer to begin chilling.

We’ll show you when to take it out to add the chocolate chips or any other mix-ins you’d like.

OUR RECIPE DEVELOPER SAYS

Before you begin, make sure to chill the mixing bowl, whisk/beaters, and the loaf pan in the freezer. This helps the cream whip up faster and achieve stiff peaks.

STEP ONE: Place a medium-sized metal or glass mixing bowl in the freezer. The bowl should be able to hold three to four quarts.

If using a stand mixer, place the wire whisk attachment in the freezer with the mixing bowl. Place the beaters in the freezer if you use a handheld mixer.

STEP TWO: Line an 8½ x 4½ metal loaf pan (or a 9×5) with plastic wrap, then place the loaf pan in the freezer as well.

Freeze the loaf pan, mixing bowl, and whisk or beaters for 30 minutes.

STEP THREE: Add the sweetened condensed milk, vanilla, and salt to a medium-sized mixing bowl. Stir to combine.

STEP FOUR: Remove the mixing bowl and whisk or beaters from the freezer. Pour in the cold heavy cream. Beat the cream on high speed until stiff peaks form.

PRO TIP:

PRO TIP: When whipping the heavy cream, be patient and whip it until stiff peaks form. This means the cream should hold its shape when you lift the beaters or whisk.

STEP FIVE: Gently fold one cup of the whipped heavy cream at a time into the sweetened condensed milk mixture.

PRO TIP:

When combining the whipped cream with the sweetened condensed milk mixture, fold gently to maintain the airiness and fluffiness of the mixture. Overmixing can deflate the air and result in a denser ice cream.

STEP SIX: Remove the metal bread pan from the freezer. Evenly spoon the whipped cream mixture into the loaf pan.

Cover with aluminum foil and place back in the freezer for two hours.

STEP SEVEN: Remove the foil-covered loaf pan from the freezer. Sprinkle half of the miniature chocolate chips on top of the ice cream mixture. Swirl with a knife to distribute the chips.

Sprinkle the remaining chips and swirl with the knife. You can reserve one to two tablespoons of mini chocolate chips to sprinkle over the top of the ice cream.

Cover the loaf pan with the aluminum foil and freeze for an additional three hours. Remove the foil before scooping and serving.
