Devouring a brownie in a mug is a delicious experience!

It’s warm and gooey on the inside, with a crunchy top layer, full of flavorful chocolate chips.

The sweet aroma of semi-sweet chocolate takes over your senses as soon as it’s ready to be eaten.

To make this decadent treat, you’ll need:

  • 3 tablespoons of all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons of Dutch-process cocoa powder
  • 3 tablespoons of brown sugar
  • Pinch of salt
  • ¼ teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 3 tablespoons of milk
  • 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons of chocolate chunks or chips
  • 1 tablespoon of beaten egg (see notes)

PRO TIP:

If you want a larger serving of this fudgy chocolate brownie, make it in a separate mug. Do not increase the amounts in this recipe. Simply Increasing the quantities will not give you the same delicious result without significant adjustments to the recipe and cooking time.

Substitutions And Additions

MIX-INS: You can use any type of chocolate chip (or chip alternative – peanut butter chips, white chocolate chips, nuts, etc.) instead of the chocolate chunks for this single-serving brownie.

NUTS: Mixing in pecans or walnuts to this mug dessert will add a nice crunch.

GRANULATED SUGAR: To adjust the sweetness level or add a unique flavor twist, you can try using brown sugar or coconut sugar instead of granulated sugar.

Brown sugar will bring a deeper, caramel-like flavor, while coconut sugar imparts a subtle nutty taste.

MILK: If you’re dairy-free or prefer an alternative, swap regular milk for almond milk, soy milk, or oat milk.

These non-dairy options won’t significantly change the taste but can add a subtle nutty or oat-like undertone to your brownie.

DUTCH-PROCESS COCOA POWDER: For a less intense chocolate taste, try substituting regular cocoa instead for the Dutch chocolate cocoa powder

How To Make This Brownie In A Mug Recipe

Mug cakes are the perfect way to satisfy a craving fast without even turning on the oven.

All you need to do is mix the ingredients up following our directions below, cook it in the microwave, and in minutes, you’ll be digging in!

OUR RECIPE DEVELOPER SAYS

The brownie batter ingredients can be made right in the mug itself. I like to stir the dry ingredients together first to make sure they’re well combined. Then mix in the wet ingredients.

STEP ONE: Stir together the dry ingredients in a 6 to 8-ounce microwave-safe mug.

PRO TIP:

Brownie in a mug does not rise much; just a little bit. I recommend a 6 to 8-ounce mug. Depending on your mug’s shape/size, the brownie may not come up to the top edge but will still taste delicious.

STEP TWO: In a separate bowl, use a fork or small whisk to thoroughly beat one egg. Measure one tablespoon of the beaten egg and add it to the mug.

PRO TIP:

The egg in the recipe adds some leavening and makes a chewier brownie. You wouldn’t think a tablespoon of egg could make a difference in your mug cake, but it does!

Of course, you can skip this ingredient, and you will still have a nice brownie in a mug, but if you can, add in the egg. You can make about three recipes from one egg.

STEP THREE: Add vanilla, milk, and vegetable oil to the mug and stir to make a batter. Mix in half of the chocolate chunks and sprinkle the other half over the top.

STEP FOUR: Microwave mug brownie for 1 minute to 1 minute 15 seconds. The mug cake is done when it no longer appears wet across the top.

How To Serve The Best Brownie In A Mug

Enjoy this mug filled with an ooey gooey brownie along with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or cookies and cream ice cream to make it an even more indulgent treat.

Make a second mug to share with a friend.

The best drink for a delicious, decadent brownie mug is creamy hot chocolate topped with freshly whipped cream and marshmallow bits.

If you are looking for something less sweet, try a satisfying cup of freshly brewed coffee to cut through the richness of the brownie.

Our vanilla mug cake and chocolate mug cake are two more delicious variations of this easy recipe.

Storing Brownie Mug Cake

This treat is best made on demand and really doesn’t keep that well for any length of time, but if you do have leftovers, the counter is the best choice.

ON THE COUNTER: Cover the fudgy brownie in a mug tightly with plastic wrap and store it on the countertop for up to three days.

IN THE FREEZER: This delicious mug brownie won’t keep in the freezer. It is best to make it and enjoy it fresh.

This easy chocolate brownie does not reheat well, and we don’t recommend trying to store it in the freezer for any length of time.

What size of coffee mug should I use for this chocolate mug brownie recipe?

A 6 to 8-ounce mug is just the right size for this great recipe.

How long should I cook this microwave brownie mug cake recipe?

The cooking time will depend on the wattage of your microwave, but we find somewhere between 60 to 75 seconds is about right. Keep an eye on your cake near the end of cooking and watch for the center to be just set. Don’t overcook it, or you will end up with a dry cake.
