You’ll need:

  • 1 (29-ounce) can of tomato purée
  • 1 (6-ounce) can of tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon of fresh minced garlic cloves
  • 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of onion powder
  • 2 teaspoons of Italian seasoning
  • 1½ teaspoons of kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon of dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon of dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon of fresh cracked black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon of red pepper flakes
  • 2 whole bay leaves

PRO TIP:

Make sure you are buying tomato purée rather than tomato sauce for this recipe. The tomato purée will give you a more flavorful pizza sauce.

Substitutions And Additions

OLIVE OIL: You can add two to three tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil to this delicious pizza sauce to add even more flavor to your pizza.

HEAT: If you want a milder sauce, you can eliminate the red pepper flakes in this recipe.

How To Make This Pizza Sauce Recipe

This perfect sauce freezes really well, so you could make a big batch and freeze the extras for later.

STEP ONE: In a 3 to 4-quart saucepan over medium heat, whisk the tomato purée and tomato paste until smooth.

STEP TWO: Add the minced garlic, sugar, onion powder, Italian seasoning, kosher salt, oregano, basil, black pepper, red pepper flakes, and whole bay leaves.

Stir well to combine. 

PRO TIP:

You can add up to two extra tablespoons of fresh minced garlic for a stronger garlic flavor.

STEP THREE: Allow the pizza sauce to come to a very low boil. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 20 to 25 minutes, stirring occasionally.

STEP FOUR: Remove from the heat. Remove the bay leaves.

STEP FIVE: Spoon the pizza sauce into 2-pint size canning jars. Allow the sauce to cool slightly without lids.

Once cooled, place lids onto the jars and store in the refrigerator until ready to use.
