Campfire Pizza
I have to be honest: growing up, we never really went camping. I’m more an indoors kind of girl. As I’ve gotten older — and had a gaggle of boys — that’s all changed.
What I love about these campfire pizzas is that they can be easily prepped ahead at home before you leave for camping — or at your campsite. Whatever works best for you.
Another thing I love about this campfire pizza recipe is their versatility. My kids love choosing their own toppings — and they all seem to like something different. It’s fun for them to pick out their favorite toppings: various meats, veggies, and cheese make for the perfect, delicious pizza when combined with dough and sauce.
Once you select your choices, it’s easy to bake this homemade campfire pizza right over the bonfire or grill.
Campfire Pizza Ingredients you will need:
- Nonstick spray
- Tin foil
- ¼ cup vegetable/canola oil
- 4 Naan bread
- 1 chicken breast, cut into bite-size pieces
- 1 Tablespoon dry Ranch dressing (used to flavor the chicken)
- 4-6 strips of bacon cut into bite size pieces and cooked
- 1-2 cups of Italian cheese blend
- ½ cup bottled ranch dressing
- ½ cup fresh spinach, cut into thin strips (optional)
- 2 Tablespoons minced red onion
- 1 Tablespoon minced garlic
How to Make Campfire Pizza
Prepare your chicken either at home or while camping by placing the bite-size pieces into a cast iron skillet and sprinkling the dry ranch dressing over the chicken. Cook the chicken until browned and cooked completely through. If you prepared it at home just place the chicken in a plastic Ziploc or storage container to take with you camping.
Fire prep: Prepare your fire with either wood or charcoal. Let it burn down until ash gray with moderate heat but no big flames. Prepare your grate to go over the fire by spraying it (away from the fire) with nonstick spray.
For the pizza, you’ll start by brushing oil on one side of the naan bread and place oil side down onto the grate over the fire. Watch carefully until it is golden brown. Remove from the fire. Now you are ready to build your own personal campfire pizza!
Take the grilled Naan bread off the grate and brush oil on the non-grilled side.
Turn the naan bread over with the oil side down and begin to make your own pizza on the grilled side.
First, place some bottled ranch dressing onto your naan bread and spread it over the whole piece of bread.
Next add the cooked chicken, bacon, chopped garlic, red onion, and spinach in the amounts you desire all over the piece of naan. Top the pizza off with cheese.
How to Cook Pizza on a Campfire
Place the pizza directly onto the grate over the fire. Watch carefully until it is heated through and the cheese is melting. If your cheese is slow to melt you can make a “tent” out of a piece of foil and place over the top of the pizza to help the cheese melt more.
When the pizza is done to your liking use a big spatula to remove the pizza to a cutting surface and use your pizza cutter to cut into the desired number of pieces. Enjoy!
Cooking tips:
The foil side that touches the grate will most likely be a little oily from the nonstick spray or dirty with ash when you remove it so be careful.
Remember anything cooked over the open flame will be hot when removing, grill with care!
