You’ll need:

For The Spice Rub:

  • 1 tablespoon of smoked paprika
  • 1 tablespoon of chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon of garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon of onion powder
  • 2 teaspoons of dry mustard
  • 2 teaspoons of kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon of cumin
  • 1 teaspoon of black pepper

For The Ribs:

  • 4 pounds of Country Style Pork Ribs (we used bone-in)
  • 2 tablespoons of spice rub
  • 1 cup of chopped yellow onion
  • 2 cups of barbecue sauce (I used the original Sweet Baby Ray’s brand)
  • 1 cup of soda/cola (I used the original Coke brand, not Diet)
  • 1 teaspoon of liquid smoke

PRO TIP:

You will not use all the spice rub for this slow cooker country style ribs recipe; however, you can store the extra spice rub in a sealed container to use at a later time.

This is a great all-around rub for grilled chicken or pork. You can double the dry rub recipe and store it in a small mason jar in the pantry for up to 1 year.

Substitutions And Additions

COKE: If you do not like Coke, then any brand of brown soda will work. Dr. Pepper is another great alternative. I just do not recommend using diet soda for this delicious recipe.

BBQ SAUCE: I used Original Sweet Baby Ray’s barbecue sauce for this recipe because that is our family’s favorite, but you can substitute it with your favorite BBQ sauce brand instead.

You can also omit the liquid smoke and choose a barbecue sauce with a smoky flavor instead.

RIBS: We used bone-in, but you could also use boneless ribs for these BBQ country-style ribs recipe, although you may have to adjust the cooking time to ensure they are fully cooked.

SPICE: If you want a little bit more spice on these crockpot country-style pork ribs, add a dash of red pepper flakes to your spice rub.

How To Make This Slow Cooker Country Style Pork Ribs Recipe

STEP ONE: In a small bowl, combine the smoked paprika, chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, dry mustard, kosher salt, cumin, and black pepper for the spice rub.

STEP TWO: Place ribs into the bottom of the slow cooker in a single layer (as best as possible) and rub with the 2 tablespoons of the spice rub, making sure that the rub covers all the meat. Top with chopped onions.

OUR RECIPE DEVELOPER SAYS

Make sure to spray your slow cooker with nonstick cooking spray. Using a crockpot liner is also a great option and a great way for easy clean-up after cooking your delicious ribs.

STEP SIX: Pour the cooking liquids into a medium-sized pot and boil for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring frequently, or until the liquids have been reduced by half.

This will give you a nice thick sauce to pour over your platter of country-style pork ribs before serving.

PRO TIP:

Alternately, if your slow cooker has a saute setting, you can just leave the liquids in the slow cooker and bring it to a boil right inside the slow cooker.

How to Serve

Once your country-style pork ribs are cooked and tender, they can be served with your favorite sides for a great BBQ meal.

Potato salad, dill pickle pasta salad, and our cucumber salad are all tasty sides that will complement this yummy main course.

Our slow cooker pulled BBQ chicken and Mississippi pot roast recipes are two more meaty and easy recipes.

Storage

IN THE FRIDGE: It is best to eat your country ribs immediately, but leftovers from this easy recipe can be stored in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.

IN THE FREEZER: You can freeze the ribs for up to three months. Double-wrap the ribs in aluminum foil before freezing.

Allow the ribs to thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I store leftovers of these ribs?

Leftovers of these slow cooker pork ribs are best eaten right away but can be stored in the fridge for up to two days.

What is the best barbecue sauce for these slow cooker ribs?

You can use your favorite barbecue sauce. Any brand will work fine. If you choose a smoky sauce, you can omit adding the liquid smoke to the slow cooker.

What is liquid smoke?

Liquid smoke is made from condensing the smoke from burning wood and is often used as a flavoring to simulate the flavor of cooking over a fire. Adding a little bit of liquid smoke will give your meat a nice smoky flavor.
