The unique taste and texture of these cookies come from the brown sugar, which adds a rich, almost caramel-like flavor that’s simply irresistible.

Unlike regular sugar cookies, these treats have a heartier, chewier consistency that’s perfect for satisfying cravings at any time of the day.

You’ll need:

  • 2 cups of dark brown sugar
  • 1 cup of unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg
  • 2¼ cups of all-purpose flour
  • 1½ teaspoons of baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon of salt

Substitutions And Additions

BROWN SUGAR: You can substitute light brown sugar for dark brown sugar in these simple brown sugar cookies.

BUTTER: You can use salted butter instead of unsalted in this great cookie recipe; just omit the salt listed in the ingredients.

VANILLA EXTRACT: Vanilla extract adds a wonderful aroma and flavor to these cookies.

You can also try using an equal amount of almond extract instead. The almond extract will lend a distinct nuttiness to the cookies, adding a unique touch.

How To Make This Brown Sugar Cookies Recipe

Our instructions will walk you through making the easy dough and baking the cookies. Let’s get started.

OUR RECIPE DEVELOPER SAYS

You can make dough for this brown sugar cookie recipe up to 24 hours in advance and keep it refrigerated.

STEP ONE: Preheat the oven to 375°F.

Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper.

STEP TWO: Add brown sugar and butter to a medium bowl and beat with an electric mixer until creamy.

Then add the egg and vanilla extract and mix until combined.

PRO TIP:

Make sure you cream your butter and brown sugar well. If you have pockets of butter left during baking, it will melt, causing uneven spread.

How To Serve

These delectable delights are sure to keep you coming back for more. Make them a staple in your cookie jar for afternoon snacks, bedtime snacks, or for taking to potlucks.

One fantastic option to accompany your cookies is a nice cup of hot chocolate, preferably with a dollop of whipped cream. The warm, velvety cocoa drink perfectly balances the crispy texture of the cookies while enhancing the caramel notes in the brown sugar.

This guide will provide you with all the information you need to store and savor these brown sugar cookies.

MAKE AHEAD: If you want to get a head start on your baking, you can make the dough ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator.

Once you have prepared the dough according to the recipe instructions, tightly wrap it in plastic wrap or place it in an airtight container.

You can refrigerate the dough for up to two days before baking.

When you’re ready to bake, simply take out the dough, let it soften slightly at room temperature, and proceed with the baking instructions.

ON THE COUNTER: Store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for five to six days.

IN THE FREEZER: Freeze these brown sugar cookies for up to three months in an airtight container.

REHEATING: To enjoy the frozen brown sugar cookies, you have a few options for reheating.

If you prefer a soft and chewy texture, simply let the cookies thaw at room temperature for about 30 minutes.

If you’re in a hurry, you can use a microwave. Place a few cookies on a microwave-safe plate and heat them on a low-power setting in 15-second intervals until they are warmed through.

Be careful not to overheat, as it can cause the cookies to become dry or lose their texture.
