The combination of warm, gooey apples mixed with sweet, crumbly topping is an absolute delight for your taste buds.

The best part? The foil packets lock in all the flavors, creating a scrumptious treat that surpasses any oven-baked dessert.

You’ll need:

For The Apple Filling:

  • 6 cups of apples (5 apples of any variety) peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoons of light brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons of apple pie spice

For The Topping:

  • 1¼ cups of all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup of light brown sugar, packed
  • ¾ cup of quick oats
  • ½ teaspoon of apple pie spice
  • ½ cup of salted sweet cream butter, melted
  • Vanilla ice cream (optional topping)
  • Caramel sundae topping (optional topping)

Substitutions And Additions

APPLES: Granny Smith apples are the best for apple crisp, but we also like Golden Delicious, Pink Lady, and Honeycrisp apples.

OLD-FASHIONED OATS: These are also known as rolled oats. It’s fine to use quick-cooking oats instead if that’s what you have on hand.

How To Make This Campfire Apple Crisp In Foil Packets Recipe

Prepare the apples and topping in a bowl while the campfire or grill is heating up. Bundle everything in your foil packets and then cook on the fire until warmed through.

OUR RECIPE DEVELOPER SAYS

What is fantastic about these campfire apple pie packets is that they can be easily prepped ahead at home before you leave for camping — or at your campsite. Whatever works best for you.

STEP ONE: Preheat your grill to 350°F (if you can pre-set the temp on your grill. If not, just be sure to keep an eye on the packets as they cook). If you are using a fire pit, you will need at least 2 to 3 inches of nice hot coals to set the packets over. It’s also important that your fire pit has a grate to place over the coals.

PRO TIP:

If you do not have a grill or fire pit, you can use your oven. You can bake the apple crisp foil packets at 400°F for 15 to 20 minutes.

STEP TWO: Using a large mixing bowl, toss together the thinly sliced apples, brown sugar, granulated sugar, and apple pie spice. Set them aside.

PRO TIP:

You can slice the apples the night before. Toss the uncoated apple slices in 1 tablespoon of lemon juice and store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator or cooler until you are ready to assemble the packets.

STEP SIX: Scoop out ½ cup of the topping on top of the apple filling.

STEP SEVEN: Fold the long sides of the foil packets together, then fold the ends toward the middle.

STEP EIGHT: If you are using a barbecue grill, place the packets around the edges of the grill. If you are using a campfire, place the packets on the grate over the fire pit. Cook packets for 20 minutes. Remove the packets using oven mitts and allow them to rest for 5 to 10 minutes. Always be very careful when opening the foil packets.

PRO TIP:

Always keep an eye on the placement of the foil packets. Try to place foil packets around the edges of the barbecue or campfire grill, as the temperature on a grill or fire pit can fluctuate.

STEP NINE: Serve the apple crisp à la mode with vanilla ice cream, Cool Whip, and a drizzle of caramel sauce.

PRO TIP

Any leftovers of these delicious foil packets can be eaten as breakfast the following day. (It’s vacation! Enjoy!)

Funny story! We have a propane griddle that we hadn’t used yet, so I made a point of bringing griddle friendly foods this trip. I also premixed the apple seasoning and crumble mix for this.
It’s too windy for the griddle, and…I forgot the butter. !!!! So I made it on the stovetop. With olive oil. 😕😂 But it was still really good! Can’t wait to try it with butter.
