Every Tuesday from now till early September we’re going to be featuring a budget themed dessert table or tablescape (or party!) from a talented woman who has graciously volunteered to take on our Boy Bash on a Budget Challenge. And we’re even going to throw our own work into the ring from time to time and follow the same budget confines. Every participant gets the Spaceships and Laser Beams Collection of their choice + $50 for a dessert table or $20 for a tablescape. They can also use anything they are able beg or borrow or make themselves. (Visit our resource page for even more dinosaur birthday party ideas.)

This awesome dinosaur themed, boy birthday party is by Allison, of Wild Rose Sweets and Styling. Allison designed this dessert table to initiate our Boy Bash on a Budget experiment. She chose to use our Prehistoric Party Dinosaur Collection and I’m quite certain any little guy would love this for a birthday party; I’m equally convinced that any mom would love it, too! Allison shares her ideas of how to put together a stylish boy bash without breaking the bank by using easy-to-find party supplies, a simple cake and terrific decorations.

As Allison sagely commented, all event planners and moms work within a budget of some sort. A small budget turns the focus from what to buy to how can you creatively use what you already have. For most parties, this one included, food costs claim the biggest budget chunk. Allison opted to major on earth tones to build a lush jungle look for her dessert table. The green and brown burlap backdrop and table covering is an affordable option that can be re-used for future parties, too. A bamboo mat adds another affordable texture dimension. Allison chose to employ white dishes she already had; lining the serving trays with (economical) plain, brown wrapping paper added a rustic accent that works perfectly for this theme. Silk palms that are part of her household’s everyday décor provide a free vertical accent. She also snipped a few cuttings from bushes in her yard!

This birthday cake sounds divine: caramel mud cake with cream cheese frosting. Crushed Oreo dirt, chocolate candy rocks and a plastic toy dino top it off. If baking a cake isn’t your thing, a plain grocery store version can easily be decorated with printables, candies or toys. As long as there is cake, young birthday guests will be satisfied!

The dessert choices are fabulous and Allison made them even more fun by giving them witty names, something that adds another clever dimension to the party without costing a cent. She used our collection medallions and mini dinosaurs as colorful cupcake toppers; those colors were repeated throughout the desserts:  Lava Juice (cream soda); Jurassic Jaffa Cupcakes; Molten Chocolate Brownies (with colored sugar “lava”); Dinosaur Bones (meringues); Jungle Slime (lime Jello), Fossilized Caramel Critters (caramel corn); Dinosaur Buddies (iced sugar cookies); Vanilla Dinosaur Eggs (egg shaped cake balls); and Herbivore Treats (fresh fruit).

Allison’s budget-wise creativity extended outside, too. I love our skeleton-like dinosaur birthday banner which Allison used to welcome guests! She added our printables to several areas to fashion imaginative play stations. There was a Jungle Doctor office and a pre-tour stop that included a dinosaur identification chart, binoculars and a camera. A play car became the lead Jurassic Park Tour Vehicle. What fun!

Pre-party, Allison put paper mache over balloons to form dino eggs. When they dried she hid candies inside them. One of the kids’ favorite party activities was discovering the nest of dinosaur eggs’ and breaking them to get to the candies!

Allison really impressed me with her budget-wise party creativity. She proved that a boy’s birthday party can be stylish and economical, which is just the point I want to make with our Boy Bash on a Budget Challenge!
