The texture of this cake is moist and soft, with a deliciously sweet aroma of cinnamon and apples.

Infused throughout with caramel sauce, this cake offers the perfect combination of flavors to satisfy your sweet tooth.

You’ll need:

  • 3 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon of apple pie spice blend
  • 2 teaspoons of baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon of baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon of salt
  • 3 eggs, room temperature
  • 1¾ cups of Musselman’s Applesauce
  • 1½ cups of light brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 1 cup of vegetable oil
  • ½ cup of granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract
  • 1¼ cups of your favorite store-bought salted caramel sauce, divided into ¾ cup and ½ cup

PRO TIP:

If you do not want to buy a large jar of Musselman’s applesauce for this recipe, you can use 2 (6-ounce) Big Cups for kids.

They are sold as a four-pack which you find canned fruits at your grocery store. You can save the other 2 cups for future recipes or send them in your child’s school lunch.

Substitutions And Additions

CARAMEL SAUCE: If you would like to make your caramel sauce from scratch, check out our caramel sauce recipe here. Make sure you warm it up slightly if it isn’t easily pourable.

APPLE PIE SPICE: If you do not have an apple pie spice blend, you can substitute that with a mixture of 2¼ teaspoons cinnamon, ½ teaspoon nutmeg, and ¼ teaspoon cloves.

OIL: If you do not have vegetable oil, canola or avocado oil will work just as well in this applesauce cake recipe. You want to make sure it is a light and neutral oil.

Coconut or olive oil will NOT work for this recipe as they will impart too much of their flavor to the cake, and it will not be as delicious.

Their handpicked apples from family farms create a high-quality and delicious product you can feel good serving your family. Their large, multi-serve jars are perfect for baking. You’ll find them in Original, Unsweetened, and Cinnamon.

How To Make This Applesauce Bundt Cake Recipe

STEP ONE: Preheat the oven to 350°F. Spray a 12-cup bundt pan with baker’s spray. Set it aside.

STEP TWO: In a medium bowl, add the all-purpose flour, apple pie spice blend, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Stir to combine.

STEP THREE: In a large bowl, add the eggs, Musselman’s applesauce, light brown sugar, vegetable oil, granulated sugar, and vanilla extract.

OUR RECIPE DEVELOPER SAYS

When measuring your brown sugar, make sure to pack it into the dry measuring cup.

This ensures an accurate measurement. You do not need to do this with granulated (white) sugar.

wet ingredients blended together in a bowl

STEP FOUR: Using an electric mixer on medium speed, mix the wet ingredients for 1 minute.

STEP FIVE: Add half the flour mixture to the wet ingredients and mix for 30 seconds.

Add the remaining half of the flour mixture to the bowl and mix for an additional 30 seconds or until the batter is smooth and all the flour has been incorporated.

You will want to scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl to ensure that the cake batter is evenly mixed.

STEP SIX: Pour batter into the prepared pan and bake the cake for 45 minutes or until golden brown and a toothpick or cake tester inserted comes out clean.

PRO TIP:

Bundt pans vary, so the baking time will vary accordingly.

If you have a heavier bundt pan, it will take slightly longer for the cake to bake. If your pan is lighter and thinner, it will take less time.

Make sure to test for doneness with a toothpick or cake tester.

STEP SEVEN: Once your cake has been baked, using a long toothpick or wooden skewer, poke a lot of little holes all over the top of the cake, which, once flipped out of the bundt pan, will actually be the bottom of your cake.

holes poked on the top of the cake with a toothpick

STEP EIGHT: With the ¾ cup of caramel sauce, you will very slowly drizzle it onto the warm cake, allowing the caramel sauce to soak into all the tiny holes.

You can use a spoon to gently ease any standing caramel sauce into all the holes.

STEP NINE: Let the cake cool in the bundt pan for 30 to 45 minutes before flipping it onto a serving plate.

You will want to make sure that all the caramel sauce has soaked into the cake before removing it from the pan.

STEP TEN: Once you have plated your applesauce bundt cake, you can take your reserved ½ cup caramel sauce and drizzle it over the top of the cake for garnish.

You may need to re-warm the caramel sauce if it has cooled too much and has started to firm up, making it too thick to pour. You can easily do this in the microwave for 15 to 20 seconds.

PRO TIP:

If you do not wish to either soak your cake with the caramel or garnish the top with it, you can store your remaining caramel sauce in a sealed jar, in the refrigerator, for up to a month.

It makes a wonderful ice cream topping. You will want to remove the lid and microwave it for 15 to 30 seconds to warm it up enough to make it pourable before use.

Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side with a little extra drizzle of caramel sauce right before serving.

Storage

We’ve got you covered with some easy storage tips to ensure your cake stays fresh.

IN THE FRIDGE: You can store your spiced applesauce cake in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

I do not suggest leaving it out at room temperature for more than 24 hours, as the caramel will make the cake too soggy.

IN THE FREEZER: Once the cake has cooled, you can wrap it in plastic wrap and then in a large Ziploc bag. It will keep in the freezer for up to three months.

This amazing applesauce bundt cake is one of the moistest cakes you’ll ever have, thanks to the caramel sauce that is soaked into the cake once it is baked. A slice of this divine cake is perfect for dessert or an afternoon snack, along with a cup of tea or coffee.

Instructions

Cake

  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Spray a 12-cup bundt pan with baker’s spray. Set aside.

I would probably serve the applesauce bundt cake with extra caramel and lightly dusted with powered sugar. The recipe sounds delicious, and I’m excited to try it.

  4. Pam long says

I would put whipped cream on mine. I think with caramel sometime when u go back later to get a piece it get hard

I would add some extra Carmel drizzle on the applesauce bundt cake, but man the questions were tricky bc when I love deserts like this its so hard not to add a scoop of classic vanilla ice cream or whip on top then drizzel😁

  6. Brianna Jackman says

    5 stars
This recipe sounds amazing. The only thing that I’m worried about is all the sugar that is in it and on it. My husband is a diabetic and in all honesty I think using regular frosting is better then all the sugar that’s in Carmel sauce. At least with frosting you can make your own with as little sugar as you want. My suggestion is y’all need to try making these recipes diabetic friendly. But, for my kids and I, I look forward to trying this.

  7. Stephanie Pirlot says

    5 stars
Carmel is definitely an awesome way to make the bunt cake taste more like a Carmel apple. Just like a actual Carmel apple, it totally covered with Carmel! Warm Carmel all over the cake would be the perfect finishing touch!

  8. Joy Fletcher Jacobsen says

    5 stars
I made this cake many years ago for my children.

I would add carrot and raisins both, but would leave off the sauce and use cream cheese frosting or warm and use whipped cream (as I do gingerbread).

  9. Shelia Naginey says

    5 stars

  20. Mary-Jude Vetter says

Would you serve applesauce bundt cake with whipped cream? For a special occasion, a dab of whip cream would add elegance for the cake presentation.
Would you serve it with extra caramel? No, the flavor of the cake needs to be identified when eaten. Too much caramel would mask the delicious blend of flavors in the cake.
Would you serve this cake dusted with powdered sugar? Depending on the occasion. If the caramel topping wasn’t used and the applesauce cake was being taken to a get-together, I would opt to use a dusting of powder sugar
Would you add chocolate chips to this applesauce bundt cake? I love any kind of chocolate-fruit combination. The chocolate would compliment the applesauce and spices.
Would you add shredded carrots to this applesauce bundt cake? Yes, freshly grated carrots, blend of warm spices, and some chopped pecans becomes a classic homemade goodness. The applesauce cake is very versatile and also the addition of other ingredients for a delicious surprise and taste. If you have someone in the family that doesn’t like vegetables, good way to sneak extra nutrition into a dessert. With caramel, no doubt there wouldn’t be a crumb left.
Have you ever baked an applesauce bundt cake before? Yes, I have, not using the recipe posted but a family recipe.
Would you add raisins to this applesauce bundt cake? I would add a 1/2 cup of golden raisins because the raisins light color perfectly compliments the cake and flavor.

I am going to have to try this recipe for sure! I’m from an apple orchard farm and I’m always looking for new recipes to use our applesauce. I’m going to add some chocolate chips to see how that turns out. I was also thinking that adding some pineapple and shredded carrots may be tasty!

  25. Wendy perkins says

First time making recipe so didn’t change a thing. Love it!!! So did everybody else, it’s gone! Might try adding carrots sometime or drained crushed pineapple but I really “don’t need to fix what ain’t broke”.

  26. Cynthia Grove says

I would serve this with brown sugar, or whipped cream (only home made whipped cream). I might consider the caramel.

  27. Joy Swanson says

I believe I would use extra Carmel.
    Can never have to much!!
    Can’t wait to try it.
    Putting ingredients on my list!

I’ve never made this before. So the very first time I would make it just like the recipe states but with extra sauce. Can’t go wrong with that. Then each time when I do make it again I’ll add chocolate chips with extra sauce.

Probably serve this at a family dinner or share with friends at work.

  34. Jodee says

I’ve never prepared an applesauce bundt cake before but will give it a try; this recipe looks excellent. I expect I’ll serve it with extra caramel sauce.

  35. Susan Schmirler says

My husband lives ice cream therefore I would make it optional to serve the cake with vanilla or cinnamon ice cream and caramel sauce on top.

  36. Gerri Page says

It looks delicious and since I love caramel sauce, that is my choice to drizzle lots of it on the cake.

  37. Morwenna Schifter says

I don’t think the cake needs any additions! But it I was going to add anything and, I know this wasn’t a choice, but vanilla ice cream on the side!

  38. Cheryl Ailes says

I have never tried apple sauce cake. So I would not know what to put on the cake. Except I wouldn’t put Carmel on it, because I don’t like Carmel.

  39. Patricia Howe says

This looks like a great cake. When I serve it, with all family present, it will get ice cream, whipped cream and or caramel offered. They can put on their cake any or all of the extra toppings. Because we are a varied family (diabetes, lactose intolerant , and normal) it is a bit of this and a bit of that.

  40. Sandra says

I would add pecans & caramel to the inside swirled to go through & drizzle caramel sauce warmed after its baked on top.

  41. Shirly Assink says

Favorite Easter was watching our children help the grandchildren in hunting Easter eggs and remembering how they ran and found eggs and tried to fool brothers and sisters. I have not made chocolate eggs before but would add dark chocolate, a marchino cherry and nuts.

  42. Kathie McCarey says

    5 stars
Going to try this for sure but without the caramel sauce since my husband is a diabetic. A nice scoop of sugar free ice cream will go great on it.

  43. Laura Yarzebinski says

    5 stars
This sounds like a wonderful fall recipe and I would make mine even better by using my home made applesauce!

  44. Sandi says

I’ve never made an applesauce cake before. I think I would like it with just powdered sugar. Your cake looks delicious! Hugs,

  45. Jenny says

Would you serve applesauce bundt cake with whipped cream?
Would you serve it with extra caramel?
Would you serve this cake dusted with powdered sugar?

I would offer little bowls of each for choices!
    Plain – check
    Powdered sugar – check
    Whipped cream – check
    Caramel – check
    All three – delish

  46. Vicki in Birmingham says

It looks perfectly delicious as it is, but I think I would add a little extra caramel and add some whipped cream on the side.
I am DEFINITELY going to make this cake!
    Thanks for posting!

This cake looks delicious, if I was going to add anything to this show stopper it would be Carrot because it adds a little sweetness and would go well with the caramel and apple sauce in this cake.

  48. Gail says

This cake looks delicious, if anything I would add Carrots because they have a natural sweetness. I think it would go well with the cake and the Caramel as well.😋

I have been making applesauce bundt cake for years using a slightly different recipe. Sometimes I even eat it for breakfast since I love it so much and it is more nutritious than donuts or even some pancakes.
I definitely want raisins in my cake, as well as black walnuts. The caramel sauce would require extra so I can pour some on the ice cream I serve with the cake.

  50. Jessi says

All the extra ingredients sound delicious, personally I like the raisins but my then mother wouldn’t eat it. I’d probably serve it with extra caramel sauce, warmed and on the side so it can be drizzled on the cake as well as on some vanilla ice cream.

  51. Teena says

    5 stars
I’m not really sure it really needs anything added to it but if I were to add something it would probably be caramel.

I haven’t made this delightful looking cake, but it also sounds delicious. If I were to make it I would surely put in chopped pecans and raisins! Yum! While still warm, I’d serve my husband and myself a warm delicious piece of cake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream
and top it with the caramel sauce with a few nuts sprinkled over the top.

Absolutely amazing! Very moist. I didn’t poke the holes to drizzle the sauce in but I made a different caramel glaze to drizzle on top of cake. This cake is nice and light too. Great texture

Someone gifted me tons of apples..I am not really a fan of apples or apple desserts especially the pie/turnover forms, so I was like bleh.

I cooked them down and used them for this…I gotta say this made me even consider buying apple sauce -which I also dislike- just to make this. I used a bit of apricot glaze ontop of the cake as I think my apples lacked in tartness..a bit of tart goes well with this to me, put some toasted walnuts ontop of it. Definitely my go to apple dessert now that is actually enjoyable and not just an ingredient dump lol.

I used gluten free flour 300g and 60g almond flour and used coconut cream/vegan butter in the salted caramel to make it gluten/dairy free.

    Anyways, thanks!
