This quick and easy ultimate grilled ham and cheese is the perfect hearty sandwich when you’re craving comfort food. Delicious bread toasted golden brown with plenty of butter, mayo, and Dijon mustard combine with ham and cheese for this classic homemade favorite.

Grilled Ham and Cheese

This epic grilled ham and cheese sandwich is one of our family’s favorites meals. It’s the perfect quick homemade lunch or dinner!

It’s ideal during the busy holiday season when you need a fast, wholesome meal. 

You’ll love how simple and easy it is to make — but it delivers a rich and hearty taste that will fill you up and stick to your ribs. 

This delicious, classic recipe is super versatile. You can switch up the bread, meat, cheeses, and toppings.

You can serve it hot on its own or with a mug of hot soup or alongside a fresh salad. The ooey-gooey melted cheese is so great!

Grilled Ham and Cheese Ingredients

This will make one sandwich:

  • 2 slices multigrain bread
  • 1 teaspoon mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 2 slices Kretschmar Black Forest Brand Ham

How to Make Grilled Ham and Cheese

STEP ONE: Spread mayonnaise on one slice and Dijon mustard on the other slice.

STEP TWO: Layer the ham and cheese — ham on one side, cheese on the other piece of bread. Place two pieces of bread together for the sandwich.

STEP THREE: Spread butter on the outside of one side of the sandwich and place the butter side down onto the grill pan or skillet. The butter creates an awesome, golden crust and the best crispiness — don’t skimp on it! 

STEP FOUR: While the sandwich is on the grill pan butter the unbuttered side that is facing you now. On medium to medium-high heat grill the sandwich until golden brown on both sides.

PRO TIP: You could also skip the stovetop grill, pan or cast-iron skillet and use a panini press as well.

Best Bread

I used a multigram for today’s sandwich but there are lots of yummy bread options: rye, wheat, white, sourdough, ciabatta, or croissant. You could even skip the toast and serve it on a waffle, bagel or tortilla! 

Best Cheese

The cheese possibilities are literally endless for this made from scratch toastie. 

I used Kretschmar Cheddar Cheese today because it’s one of my favorites. 

Additional options include swiss, gouda, brie, gruyere, or harvati. 

Best Meats

Kretschmar Black Forest Brand Ham is a favorite for our gang. BUT it’s not the only choice. You could use roast beef, turkey, or chicken.

My husband loves it with a fried egg on top as well. 

Additional Toppings

If you want to kick it up a notch, you can make this the ultimate grilled ham and cheese by adding tomato, onions, or avocado.

I always serve our sandwiches with a pickle on the side, but I know some people who bake them right inside!

This forever will be known as the “Christmas tree meal” in our family. 

Each year when we gather to decorate the tree at my Nannie’s house, she makes us grilled ham and cheese served with pickles and mugs of steaming hot homemade cocoa.
