Substitutions And Additions
CUPCAKES: If you would prefer chocolate cupcakes, you can turn them into chocolate with cocoa powder. You could even make the icing chocolate, but you will have to have a small quantity of white frosting so that you can tint it blue or pink.
SPRINKLES: Don’t forget the sprinkles! You’ve got lots of choices. Funfetti sprinkles, pearl sprinkles, or sprinkle with colored sugar (basically edible glitter). There are no rules! I like to use pink and blue sprinkle mixes with a blend of shapes.
How To Make This Gender Reveal Cupcakes Recipe
OUR RECIPE DEVELOPER SAYS
If you’re thinking about having a reveal party and you don’t want to know your baby’s gender until the big event, you’ll need some help from someone who can keep a secret!
STEP ONE: In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
STEP TWO: In a large bowl, beat the softened butter, sugar, and vanilla extract until creamy. Pour in the eggs and mix well.
STEP THREE: Mix in dry ingredients in 2 batches, alternating with milk.
STEP FOUR: Fold in the pretty blue and pink sprinkles. Use both colors so you don’t give away any hints!
No wonder they call it Funfetti — colorful sprinkles are way too much fun. Mix all ingredients until well combined.
STEP FIVE: Place white-colored cupcake liners in the 12-cup cupcake pan and fill the cupcake tins about ⅓ full of batter.
PRO TIP:
A large cookie scoop will help divide the batter evenly among the cupcake liners.
STEP SIX: Bake at 350°F for 25 minutes. Check with a toothpick to see if the cake part is baked through. If the toothpick comes out clean, the gender reveal cupcakes are done!
Another good indication is if the edges are slightly golden. When the cupcakes come out of the oven, let them cool completely.
STEP SEVEN: While you wait for the cupcakes to bake, make the vanilla icing. Beat the butter, salt, and powdered sugar on low until it’s all combined.
Add vanilla extract and beat on medium-high speed until creamy. About 3 minutes should be good. Beat in milk on medium-high speed for 1 minute or until fluffy. This makes the most deliciously creamy, buttery icing.
STEP EIGHT: Next is the secretive part. Make sure no one sees you!
Place ½ cup of the plain icing in a small bowl. Stir in a small amount of blue or pink gel food coloring until the icing is the desired color.
PRO TIP:
Be sure to let cupcakes cool completely before taking steps to add the filling.
STEP NINE: Keep your cupcakes in the pan, and as you stand over them, cut a small hole on the top of the cupcake, right in the center. This will be filled with blue or pink icing. I used a Wilton 1A icing tip to punch a hole.
STEP TEN: Fill the little hole in the center of the cupcake with the correct colored icing and place the portion of the cut out cupcake back over the top. No one will be able to know what color is hiding inside. Sneaky, huh?
STEP ELEVEN: Using the plain buttercream icing, frost the cupcakes with a piping bag and a Wilton 1A tip to get a beautiful swirl on top.
STEP TWELVE: Add a mix of blue and pink sprinkles to the icing on top so that no secrets are revealed.
How To Serve
Serve this perfect cupcake for your gender reveal party or baby shower. Once your guests bite into the middle of the cupcake, everyone will be able to share your exciting news.
Serve them with our iced tea, raspberry iced tea, sweet peach iced tea, or our southern strawberry sweet tea on the side to wash the tasty cupcakes down.
The anticipation may be killer, but upon the first bite, the room is filled with joy and tears. For tons more inspiration to announce your big news, check out our gender reveal party ideas.

Storage
IN THE FRIDGE: Because of the butter in the frosting, these homemade cupcakes are best stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container.
IN THE FREEZER: You can freeze frosted cupcakes for up to three months. They are best stored each in their own container so that the frosting doesn’t get squashed.
For the best results, freeze the cupcakes without the frosting and frost them when you are ready to serve.
These delicious gender reveal cupcakes are such a fun way to announce the gender of your baby to a group of friends and family or to find out yourself! Just bake, fill with the desired color (or have someone do it so you are surprised), and enjoy!
Frequently Asked Questions
To ensure your cupcakes are moist, make sure not to overbake them. Storing them in an airtight container will also ensure they maintain their moisture.
You could use sprinkles. Just follow the same directions, and when it is time to pipe in the colored icing, just add a spoonful of sprinkles instead.
There are a few reasons why cupcakes come out dense or crumbly. First, make sure your ingredients are at room temperature. They will not incorporate properly if they are not all at the same temperature.
Over-mixing the batter can also cause dense cupcakes. Third, opening the oven door before the cupcakes are ready can cause them to sink due to the rush of cold air.
