Substitutions And Additions
CRUST: You can make your own graham cracker crust or even substitute a premade shortbread crust for the graham cracker crust in this easy pie recipe.
ORANGE FLAVOR: If you want an even stronger orange flavor in this easy dessert, you can add 2 teaspoons of fresh orange zest to the filling mixture.
How To Make This Creamsicle Pie Recipe
Follow our step-by-step instructions to mix up the creamy pie filling and spread it in the pre-made pie crust. Give the pie plenty of time to chill and set before digging in.
Our Recipe Developer Says
You can make this the night before to save time, especially since it needs time to chill before serving.
STEP ONE: Add the ¼ cup cold water to a small bowl. Sprinkle the unflavored gelatin packet over the cold water, and stir to combine.
Allow the gelatin to bloom for 1 to 2 minutes.
PRO TIP:
Blooming gelatin means allowing it to sit for a few minutes until it has absorbed the liquid and the powdered granules have dissolved. The granules will swell as it blooms.
STEP TWO: Add ½ cup boiling water to a medium-sized mixing bowl.
STEP THREE: Add the bloomed gelatin to the boiling water.
STEP FOUR: Stir in the orange extract.
STEP FIVE: Sprinkle the orange gelatin powder over the boiling water and stir until the gelatin completely dissolves.
STEP SIX: Stir in ¼ cup of crushed ice until the ice is completely dissolved.
STEP SEVEN: Fold in the whipped topping and halved mandarin orange slices to the gelatin mixture.
PRO TIP:
If your pie crust is in a foil tin, we’d recommend sitting it (foil pan and all) inside a glass pie dish to give it a bit more stability when taking it in and out of the fridge.
STEP EIGHT: Pour the creamsicle filling into the premade graham cracker crust. Cover and chill in the refrigerator for 4 hours.
Just before you are ready to serve, slice into eight slices and garnish with a swirl of canned whipped cream.
Place 1 of the whole mandarin orange segments on top of the swirl.
PRO TIP:
Make sure you give this pie plenty of time to chill in the fridge so that the filling sets fully before serving.
