Hamburger Steak Ingredients

Hamburger Steak raw ingredients that are labeled

You’ll need:

For the Steaks

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ⅓ cup bread crumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 4 tablespoon butter, divided

For the Sauce

  • 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 cup sweet yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon garlic, minced
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1½ tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Chopped parsley for garnish

SUBSTITUTIONS AND ADDITIONS

MUSHROOMS: I suggest cremini or white button mushrooms for the gravy recipe, but you can definitely experiment with your favorite. Use a damp towel to gently clean each mushroom before starting.

CHEESE: Add half a cup of your favorite shredded cheese to the meat mixture for a cheesy variation.

VEGGIES: You could add chopped veggies to the hamburger meat mixture OR add sliced peppers to the onions and mushrooms as well.

BACON: Top with extra crispy, crumbled bacon before serving.

GROUND MEAT: You could also make this great recipe with ground pork or ground turkey if you prefer

How To Make This Hamburger Steak Recipe

PRO TIP:

You can put this recipe together up to eight hours in advance, so it’s a great option when you know you’ll have a busy evening.

STEP ONE: In a large bowl mix together the ground beef, soy sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, pepper, salt, bread crumbs, and egg. Mix only until combined, don’t over mix. Shape ground beef mixture into four equal patties.

PRO TIP:

I make the patties on the big side as they will shrink down while cooking.

STEP TWO: In a large skillet over medium-high heat melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add the ground beef patties and cook about 4 minutes on each side until browned (they will cook further in the sauce later). Remove the meat patties from the skillet and place them on a plate.

STEP THREE: Using the same skillet, reduce to medium heat and add the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter. Add in the sliced onions and mushrooms and cook for 5 to 6 minutes or until softened and browned.

STEP FOUR: Add the garlic and cook for an additional minute.

STEP FIVE: Sprinkle flour over the mushrooms, onions, and garlic and stir while cooking for one minute.

STEP SIX: Add the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce and salt and pepper to taste and cook for about 5 to 6 minutes stirring frequently.

STEP SEVEN: Add the hamburger steaks back into the skillet — along with any juices on the plate — and cover them with the gravy. Cover with a lid and reduce heat to a simmer and cook for another 10 minutes. Remove lid and cook another 10 to 15 minutes letting the sauce thicken.

PRO TIP:

Garnish the finished dish with chopped parsley, if you like!

Made this tonight and it was delicious! I forgot to add the soy sauce to the burger and omitted the Worcestershire sauce cause I’m not a fan of it. Still turned out great! I will make this again, although I will try ground elk next time!

  2. Essie says

Left out the soy sauce and Worcestershire. Too much sodium in both. Didn’t need either. It was delicious.

I have made this many times with mashed potatoes. My husband loves it and it is so good! The gravy is wonderful! It is definitely on my rotation!

This sounded great, but I adapted it some to speed up the process and lessen the calories some. I used 1 tablespoon of olive oil, instead of butter and left the burger recipe the same. For the sauce, I used cream of mushroom soup, 1/4 c. 2% milk, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and onion powder. It was a great hit with my husband. Thanks!

I made this recently and it was delicious. I saw no point in using bread crumbs or egg in the meat. I assumed this was to hold the patties together but I didn’t find it necessary. It goes great with mashed potatoes. We’ll definitely make this again.

This is an awesome recipe, I serve it with mashed potatoes and the flavor of the gravy is sooo good! My husband and I love it and I even made it for my in-laws and got rave reviews. Thanks for such a tasty but easy recipe!!

  7. Gerald Cox says

I made a few changes like
    Beefy onion soup
    Beef bullion cube
    No Worcester
    Everything else the same
It was the best I ever had!!!!!!
