Air Fryer Onions Ingredients
At the heart of this dish, the onions caramelize beautifully during the cooking process and offer a delicate sweetness.
The onions are coated in olive oil, onion powder, salt, and pepper, giving them the perfect flavor to take all of your favorite dishes to the next level.
You’ll need:
- 1 large onion or 1 medium and 1 small sweet yellow onion (about 10 ounces or 290 grams)
- 1½ tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil
- ¾ teaspoon of onion powder
- ¼ teaspoon of kosher salt
- ¼ teaspoon of fresh cracked black pepper
Substitutions and Additions
EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL: Swap with avocado oil for a slightly different, yet equally delicious, flavor in this easy air fryer recipe.
ONION POWDER: Experiment with garlic powder or Old Bay seasoning to give the onions a unique twist.
SPICY: Introduce chipotle powder or cayenne pepper for a bolder, fiery flavor kick.
How To Make This Air Fryer Onions Recipe
Making air fryer onions is an easy process that involves slicing the raw onions, adding seasoning, and then cooking them in your air fryer.
OUR RECIPE DEVELOPER SAYS
Make sure to check your air fryer manual for cooking time guidelines for your specific model, as times and temperatures vary depending on the type of air fryer you have.
STEP ONE: Remove the outer skin of the onion. Carefully use a sharp kitchen knife to slice off the top and bottom of the onion.
STEP TWO: Slice the onion in half. Place the flat part of the onion half on the cutting board. Slice the onion between ¼ and ½-inch slices.
You don’t want to slice the onion too thin. I was able to get about 3 cups of raw onion slices.
STEP THREE: Add the sliced onions to a medium-sized mixing bowl (2-3 quarts). Drizzle the extra virgin olive oil over the onion.
You can use tongs or hands to toss the onion and oil to completely coat the sliced onion. Be sure to separate the onion petals while tossing in the oil.
PRO TIP:
When drizzling the olive oil, make sure each onion slice is well-coated. This helps in achieving that desirable crispy texture.
STEP FOUR: Sprinkle the onion powder, kosher salt, and cracked pepper. Toss to coat the onion slices completely.
STEP FIVE: Depending on what brand of air fryer you have will depend on if you need to preheat your air fryer. (I have a Cosori 6.8 quart that does not require preheating. You will need to check yours.)
PRO TIP:
If your air fryer does not have the option to cook at 375°F, you can choose 380°F; just keep a close eye on your onions.
STEP SIX: Add your onion slices to your air fryer basket.
PRO TIP:
You can line your basket with parchment paper. Just remember, do not preheat the basket with the parchment paper lining. It is a fire hazard.
STEP SEVEN: Spread the seasoned onion slices in a single layer in the basket. If you have a smaller basket, you will need to cook your onions in batches. Be sure the onions are not overcrowded.
STEP EIGHT: Air fry onions for 10-12 minutes at 375°F. You will need to flip/stir the onions at 5-6 minutes to ensure the onion cooks evenly. Once the onions are cooked, remove the onions from the air fryer. You can serve the onions while hot.
