There’s nothing quite like sinking your teeth into a juicy, perfectly cooked burger. The best burgers boast a tantalizing combination of savory and slightly sweet flavors, with just the right amount of crunch from the toppings.

You’ll need:

  • 1½ pounds of ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons of A-1 steak sauce
  • ½ teaspoon of garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon of onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon of salt
  • ¼ teaspoon of black pepper
  • 4 bakery-style hamburger buns
  • 2 tablespoons of softened butter
  • 8 slices of American cheese (I used Kraft brand Deli Deluxe American)
  • Garnish: Sliced tomato, sliced onion, green leaf lettuce, and dill pickle slices.

Substitutions And Additions

TOPPINGS: The sky’s the limit with ways you can top your burger. Cheese, pickles, tomatoes, lettuce, onions, fried mushrooms, and much more. Anything you love on burgers will be perfect for this great recipe.

CHEESE: The cheese options for this burger are endless. Some great alternatives to the American cheese slices are cheddar cheese, Colby jack, or even Swiss cheese. Just remember to have your cheese sliced into sandwich slices.

BUNS: I used a bakery hamburger bun with this recipe, but you can also use a Kaiser bun or French hamburger bun as well. Just make sure your bun of choice is not bigger than the burger patty and that it is a sturdier bun and not a super soft one. I find the buns you can get from your grocery bakery department work best.

STEAK SAUCE: The A-1 steak sauce can easily be substituted with Worcestershire sauce in this recipe.

GROUND MEAT: You could also use ground pork or a mixture of pork and beef in this delicious recipe.

How To Make This Best Burger Recipe

These burgers can easily be made by combining all of the ingredients in a bowl and mixing. Divide the meat mixture into portions and cook your juicy burgers on the grill.

STEP ONE: Preheat your outdoor gas, or charcoal grill, to 450°F. Make sure that your grill grates are clean prior to placing your burgers on the grill.

STEP TWO: In a large mixing bowl, using your hands or a wooden spoon, combine the ground beef, mayonnaise, A-1 steak sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper just until all the ingredients are incorporated into the beef.

Handle the meat as little as you possibly can. The more you work the meat, the tougher it will get.

STEP THREE: Using the side of your hand, gently portion the beef mixture into 4 equal portions.

PRO TIP:

You can also broil the burgers in the oven until the meat is cooked through.

STEP FOUR: Shape each ground beef patty into a circle that is approximately 4½-5 inches round and about ¾-1 inch thick. Gently create a well or indentation in the center of your burger patty. This helps prevent your burger patty from puffing up in the center while being grilled.

STEP FIVE: Place your burger patties onto the hot grill, with the lid closed, for 5 minutes on the first side. Flip over your patties and grill for an additional 5 minutes with the lid closed.

PRO TIP:

Don’t press down on your burgers too hard with a spatula, prick them with a fork, or turn too frequently as you will lose precious juices from the meat.

STEP SIX: While your burger patties are grilling, you can slice open your bakery hamburger buns and generously butter both sides. When it is time to place the cheese slices onto the grilled burger patties to melt, you can place your hamburger buns (buttered side down) onto the grill to toast while your cheese is melting.

STEP SEVEN: Place 2 slices of American cheese onto the top of each burger patty, and close the lid of the grill for an additional 2 minutes to allow the cheese to melt before removing the burger patties from the grill.

STEP EIGHT: Allow your cooked burger patties to rest for 1-2 minutes to allow the juices to redistribute back into the burgers before serving them.

STEP NINE: You can top your burger patties with a piece of lettuce, a slice of tomato, a slice of onion, and some dill pickle slices.

How To Serve

The perfect burger is best served on a bun with tasty toppings and delicious side dishes. Try our grilled corn on the cob or dill pickle pasta salad for yummy options.

How about a side of crispy sweet potato fries or classic fries with a homemade aioli dipping sauce? You could also pair your burger with a refreshing side tomato cucumber salad.

Our Oklahoma fried onion burgers and hamburger steaks are two other tasty ways to enjoy the beefy flavor of a good burger.

Storage

Whether you want to prepare ahead, store leftovers, or freeze a batch, these simple instructions will guide you through the storing process, allowing you to savor the flavors whenever you please.

IN THE FRIDGE: Store leftover burgers in the fridge for up to 2 days.

IN THE FREEZER: You can freeze the burger patties uncooked in the freezer for up to three months and then thaw them and grill them when you are ready.

MAKE AHEAD: If you’d like to prepare these mouthwatering burgers ahead of time, you can assemble the patties and refrigerate them, covered, for up to 24 hours before cooking. This way, you can save time when you’re ready to grill and still enjoy a fresh, homemade burger.

There is nothing better than a juicy burger with all the fixings. Ideally, in my opinion, the best burger should have melted cheese oozing down the sides, but you can top yours any way you’d like. You’ll love how these burgers taste, and it’ll become a favorite recipe, especially on those magical backyard summer evenings!
