Before You Start… Read This!
This is a pretty simple, 2-ingredient recipe, but there are a few tips that can make or break it.
- Make sure your schnapps and Irish cream are very cold. It will make this shot taste much better. I suggest putting your bottles in the fridge 12 hours before you want to make these, or for at least a few hours in the freezer.
- If you want to make a tray of these for a party, pour all the butterscotch liqueur into the shot glasses first, then layer the Irish cream after. It makes it a lot faster and more efficient.
- Use 1½ ounce shot glasses. I like tall, heavy-bottomed, clear shot glasses for this recipe, because it allows me to show off the layers.
- Any spoon will work to make this shot. If you simply pour, your shot will still taste delicious, but you won’t have as much of that fancy layered look.
- It can be difficult to pour the Irish cream layer right from the bottle. So, I suggest pouring a bit into a smaller cup or even another shot glass, then adding it slowly over the spoon.

Buttery Nipple Recipe Substitutions and Additions
BAILEYS IRISH CREAM: There are many other brands of Irish cream liqueur at the liquor store that will work just as well as Baileys. Try Saint Brendan’s, Five Farms, Carolans, or Ryan’s.
BUTTERSCOTCH SCHNAPPS: There are quite a few brands of butterscotch schnapps on the market, the DeKuyper brand being the most commonly found, but you will want to use the brand you prefer best. Remember that this buttery nipple cocktail shot only contains two ingredients, so you want to use good-quality brands for the best results.
Buttery Nipple Variations
SLIPPERY NIPPLE: A close cousin to the buttery nipple, the slippery nipple swaps the butterscotch schnapps for sambuca, giving it an anise flavor instead of butterscotch.
BUTTERBALL: You may also see this shot called a Butterball at some bars — same two ingredients, just a different name.
How to Serve Buttery Nipple Shots
Buttery nipple shots are best served as a pre-drink cocktail before heading to the main course.
However, it can also be served as an after-dinner drink or dessert. Since this is a sweeter shot (it tastes like a hard butterscotch candy), it pairs well with desserts like chocolate cake, black bottom cupcakes, or even with some salty snacks like chips and dip.
If you enjoy sweet shots, you can try my Reese cup shot and Cinnamon Toast Crunch shot too. They’re both impressive shots for parties, too!

Storage
IN THE FRIDGE: These shots are meant to be enjoyed immediately, and the layers won’t keep long. However, the shot itself is fine in the fridge for 2 or 3 days. It will taste just fine, but it won’t be as pretty.

A buttery nipple shot makes a great after-dinner drink or dessert, as they are sweet and easy to sip. With a creamy texture and a mix of butterscotch and Irish cream flavors, they are the perfect addition to your party.
Rich, smooth, and slightly sweet, this layers cleanly for a balanced sip. You can browse plenty more on my drink recipes page.

- Hold a cocktail stirring spoon upside down at a slight angle, resting it just above the schnapps at the inside edge of the glass.
- Slowly pour the chilled Baileys Irish cream over the back of the spoon so it flows gently into the glass. Pour as slowly as possible to keep the two layers from mixing.
