Review RecipeWhipped Hot Chocolate
Table of Contents
Insanely decadent and creamy, this whipped hot chocolate is a fun drink that is sure to warm you up when the weather cools down. Milk is warmed and topped with a whipped, sweet chocolate-flavored cream that you can either stir in or scoop off the top.
Whipped Hot Chocolate Ingredients
This whipped hot chocolate recipe is a velvety delight. It combines the richness of cream and milk with the balanced sweetness of hot cocoa mix and powdered sugar.
The cocoa mix infuses a deep chocolate flavor that’s not too bitter or sugary, while the powdered sugar adds a subtle sweetness.
You’ll need:
- ¾ cup of heavy cream, very cold
- 3 tablespoons of hot cocoa mix, good quality
- 2 tablespoons of powdered sugar
- 10 ounces of whole milk
PRO TIP:
Garnish with mini marshmallows, chocolate sauce and chocolate sprinkles.
Substitutions And Additions
HOT CHOCOLATE MIX: I used a very good quality hot cocoa powder that I bought in a multi-serving size bag (Ghirardelli Double Chocolate 10.5 ounces) for this recipe.
You can get the individual packets (different brands can range in size from 1.25-ounce to 1.38-ounce packets), and you will just use the entire packet mixed with the heavy cream and powdered sugar and follow the recipe.
FLAVOR: You can get really creative with your hot cocoa flavors like mint mocha, french vanilla, or dark chocolate.
TOPPINGS: You can keep your whipped hot chocolate simple with just mini marshmallows, or you can get very creative and top it with crushed peppermints, mini chocolate chips, candy canes, chocolate shavings, or even holiday-themed sprinkles.
MILK: I used whole milk for this recipe, but if you prefer 2% milk or another type of milk like almond milk, oat milk, soy milk, or coconut milk, I am sure it will taste just as delicious.
To make this drink over-the-top chocolatey, you could make it using chocolate milk instead of white milk.
ALCOHOL: If you want to turn this whipped hot cocoa into a grown-up treat, you can pick your favorite creamy liquor to add to the milk.
Try Bailey’s Irish cream, coffee liqueur, or any other favorite.
How To Make This Whipped Hot Chocolate Recipe
This quick, indulgent drink gets mixed up in a bowl before being combined with warm milk. Once hot, it’s ready for sipping.
PRO TIP:
Chill the bowl and beaters before adding the ingredients since cream whips best when cold.
STEP ONE: In a medium-sized bowl, add the heavy cream, hot cocoa mix, and powdered sugar.
PRO TIP:
How dark your topping turns out will depend on the brand of cocoa mix you are using. Some will produce a lighter topping than others.
STEP TWO: Using a hand mixer, on medium speed, whip the heavy cream to soft peaks. This will take about two to three minutes.
PRO TIP:
Make sure you only whip the cream until soft peaks form. If you whip until stiff peaks form, the whipped part will be too heavy on top of the milk. You’ll know when the whipped cream is ready is when it starts to stiffen. Drag your finger or a spoon through it, and if it leaves an indentation (doesn’t come back together) it is ready.
STEP THREE: Pour the cold milk into a large 12-ounce coffee mug and heat it in the microwave on high for 1 minute and 45 seconds.
This will scald the milk (not boiling it), but you can heat it for longer if you want a hotter cup of milk.
Carefully remove the hot milk from the microwave and place it on the counter.
PRO TIP:
This makes one very large drink, so make sure that your mug is at least a 12-ounce capacity.
STEP FOUR: Carefully spoon your whipped cocoa cream onto the top of the milk. This will make a very full cup of whipped hot chocolate.
STEP FIVE: You can garnish your whipped hot chocolate with mini marshmallows, a drizzle of chocolate syrup, and sprinkles if you desire.
PRO TIP:
You should enjoy this whipped hot chocolate while it is still hot.

A hand mixer is highly recommended for whipping the cream in this recipe. You could also use a milk frother, but it doesn’t whip the cream as much as just make it frothy.
