The taste of a prickly pear margarita is truly one-of-a-kind and can be described as a refreshing blend of sweet and tart flavors.

As tequila is the base spirit, it offers warmth to the cocktail, while the prickly pear cactus syrup provides a hint of sweetness and tartness.

The addition of lime juice and orange liqueur helps balance out all these flavors and brings a citrus zing to the drink.

You’ll need:

  • Ice
  • 1½ ounces of silver tequila
  • 1½ ounces of prickly pear syrup
  • 1 ounce of fresh lime juice
  • 1 ounce of triple-sec orange liqueur
  • Kosher salt, garnish
  • Lime wedge, garnish

PRO TIP:

This recipe also makes a beautiful frozen prickly pear margarita. You will just add all the ingredients to a high-powered blender with 1-1½ cups of ice and blend on high for 30 to 45 seconds or until smooth.

Substitutions And Additions

ORANGE LIQUEUR: Any orange liqueur will work for this delicious drink recipe. Triple sec is probably the most commonly used for mixing any type of margarita, but Cointreau is another excellent option if you happen to have that on hand.

You will want to note that if your orange liqueur is tinted orange, it may change the color of your drink from the beautiful pinkish-purple color of the prickly pear.

PRICKLY PEAR SYRUP: Prickly pear fruit comes from a cactus plant and has a unique flavor profile of a mix between watermelon, kiwi, berries, and bubble gum.

It is found in the southwest, so it may be hard to find the prickly pear cactus fruit in your area if you want to make your own homemade prickly pear syrup.

However, you can find many different prickly pear syrup brands online. I like to use the Monin brand flavored syrups for my cocktails, non-alcoholic drinks, and desserts.

You will need to store the prickly pear syrup in the refrigerator once opened, but it will last quite a while for use in other drinks or even as syrup on pancakes.

How To Make This Prickly Pear Margarita Recipe

Just like a classic margarita, the first step to making this drink is coating the glass rim with salt.

Next, combine the ingredients in a cocktail shaker and give it a good mix before adding the cocktail to your glass. Garnish and enjoy!

OUR RECIPE DEVELOPER SAYS

This is a perfect cocktail for making a large batch and serving it in a pitcher for a crowd. Do not put ice into your pitcher with the other ingredients. This will dilute the drink.

Keep the drink chilled in the refrigerator and serve individual servings over ice. When making a pitcher of margaritas, you will just do the math for the number of people you want to serve, add the ingredients to the pitcher and give it a good stir.

There is no need to shake up individual portions and then add them to the pitcher.

STEP ONE: First, you will garnish your 10-ounce margarita glass by taking your wedge of lime and running it around the entire rim of the glass, and then you will dip the rim of your glass in a shallow plate or bowl with the salt.

Your small plate should be wider than the glass rim, and you just need enough salt to lightly dip the rim into it (you can dip the inside and outside of the rim or just the outside, depending on your preference).

PRO TIP:

If you do not like the salt-rimmed glass, you can certainly swap it out for a sugar-rimmed glass.

STEP TWO: Once you have rimmed your glass with the salt, you can place your lime wedge onto the rim and fill your glass half full with ice cubes.

STEP THREE: In the cup of a cocktail shaker filled with fresh ice, you will add the silver tequila, prickly pear syrup, lime juice, and triple-sec orange liqueur.

Place the cap on and shake vigorously for 20 to 30 seconds.

How To Serve

The delicious prickly pear margarita is an incredibly sweet and flavorful drink with a bright pink hue that’s hard to resist.

To complement the tart and refreshing flavor of this prickly pear drink, try serving it along with some freshly made guacamole, salsa, and chips.

The salty crunch of tortilla chips provides the perfect contrast to the margarita’s sweetness.
