What are Sloppy Joes?
A Sloppy Joe is a classic American sandwich known for its delicious but messy nature. Here’s the rundown:
- Filling: Ground beef is simmered in a sweet, tangy tomato sauce with onions and sometimes other vegetables like bell peppers. The sauce is seasoned with Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, and various spices.
- Bread: Traditionally served on a hamburger bun, which gets soaked with the flavorful sauce as you eat.
- Taste: The sandwich is savory with a touch of sweetness, and the texture is loose and juicy, hence the name “sloppy.”
Sloppy Joes are a popular choice for a quick and easy weeknight meal because they’re simple to make and typically crowd-pleasing.
Homemade Sloppy Joe Ingredients
When it comes to comfort food, few things can compare to the beloved sloppy Joe. The combination of savory ground beef, tangy tomato sauce, and a hint of sweetness make for a truly delectable experience.
Each bite is a little bit messy, but that only adds to the charm of indulging in this classic dish.
You’ll need:
- 1 pound of ground beef
- 2 tablespoons of butter
- ½ cup of finely chopped onion
- 8 ounces of tomato sauce
- ½ cup of ketchup
- 1 tablespoon of brown sugar (more to taste)
- 1 tablespoon of prepared mustard
- 2 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon of white vinegar
- ½ teaspoon of salt
- ¼ teaspoon of black pepper
- ½ teaspoon of garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon of onion powder
- 4-6 hamburger buns for serving
- 2 tablespoons of butter for the buns
How to Thicken Sloppy Joes
Simmering: This is the simplest solution. Let your sloppy joe mixture simmer for a while, uncovered, over medium heat. This allows excess moisture to evaporate, naturally thickening the sauce. Continue to stir while simmering.
Cornstarch slurry: If simmering isn’t enough, create a cornstarch slurry. Mix equal parts cornstarch and water, around a tablespoon each, until smooth. Gradually whisk it into your simmering sloppy joes. The cornstarch will thicken the sauce as it cooks. Be careful not to add too much, or your sauce might get gloopy.
Roux: For a richer thickening, make a roux. This is a mixture of cooked flour and fat. Heat some oil in a pan, then whisk in flour and cook until it becomes a golden paste. Slowly whisk this roux into your sloppy joes for a thicker sauce.
Bonus tip: Adding some peanut butter to your sloppy joes not only adds a delicious flavor but also helps thicken the sauce slightly.
How to Make a Sloppy Joe
This delicious recipe features ground beef simmered in a savory tomato sauce before being served on a warm bun. Here’s how to make it:
OUR RECIPE DEVELOPER SAYS
This sloppy Joe recipe is for 4 to 6 people, but it can be doubled or tripled. Simply make your filling and toast your buns and assemble the sloppy Joes when it’s time to eat.
STEP ONE: Brown the ground beef in a large skillet, drain the grease, and set aside the meat. Don’t skip this part, draining the meat is crucial to stopping your filling from getting greasy.
STEP TWO: In the same skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter and sauté the onions over medium-high heat until translucent, about 3 minutes.
STEP THREE: Stir in the remaining sauce ingredients and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 5 to 7 minutes. The sauce will thicken. As your sauce simmers, it will bubble and start to splatter. Watch for these splatters, and turn your heat down if the sauce is making too much of a mess.
STEP FOUR: Add the ground beef to the sloppy Joe sauce in the skillet and stir until cooked through.
PRO TIP:
Don’t wait to serve them. Sloppy Joes are best served as soon as they’re made. Adding filling to the buns and letting it sit for more than a few minutes can make your buns soggy. Instead, if you need to make this recipe ahead of time, keep your filling and buns separate until you’re ready to serve.
STEP FIVE: Butter the inside of the buns and toast them on a griddle pan.
PRO TIP:
For perfectly toasted buns, you’ll need about 2 tablespoons of softened butter for six hamburger buns to make it happen.
Sloppy Joes Recipe Substitutions and Additions
GROUND MEAT: This recipe uses a pound of ground beef. Using ground beef gives this recipe its classic sloppy Joe flavor. Popular substitutions that are still tasty include ground turkey or ground chicken.
VEGGIES: Add chopped green bell pepper or red bell pepper to include a few more hidden veggies in this dish.
SPICY: Give this homemade sloppy Joe recipe a kick by adding a dash of chili powder to the spice mix.
BROWN SUGAR: The brown sugar adds a bit of sweetness to the sloppy Joes, but you can adjust the amount you use in this recipe if you prefer it sweet or not quite as sweet.
STEP SIX: Spoon the meat mixture onto the prepared buns and enjoy.
How To Serve
There are plenty of sides that you can serve with sloppy Joes. We love pairing them with traditional BBQ or picnic-style sides such as cheesy potato casserole, corn pudding, or macaroni salad.
You could also serve them with coleslaw, a side salad, or Caesar salad.
We have reimagined classic sloppy Joes in so many new ways. Try our sloppy Joe bake or Philly cheesesteak sloppy Joes too.

Storing Homemade Sloppy Joes
Keep the sloppy Joe meat mixture in the fridge or freezer for a quick meal later. Here’s how:
IN THE FRIDGE: You can store the sloppy Joe meat mixture in the fridge for up to three days in an airtight container. Reheat in the microwave or in a skillet, and add to a hamburger bun before serving.
IN THE FREEZER: Sloppy Joe filling will freeze well for up to three months. Reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop, and add to a bun to make a sandwich.
Sloppy Joes have been a favorite recipe for decades for good reason — they’re a tasty and easy dinner. This old-fashioned sloppy Joes recipe is a crowd-pleasing family favorite and makes a much tastier dish than using the canned sauce. Its flavors are the best, and it’s easy to make. Definitely worth a little mess!
Best Sloppy Joe Recipe FAQs
This great recipe can be made ahead of time. You could whip up a double batch and store it in the freezer, and you’ll have easy meals for busy nights.
Hoagie rolls would be a great alternative to hamburger buns. They are nice and sturdy and would hold up to the saucy meat mixture nicely.
If you have a ground meat alternative you like, you can replace the ground beef to create a vegetarian version.
A pound of ground beef will yield four sandwiches.

LOVE this recipe. I did want to say I noticed in the picture you have 1 tsp of Worcestershire sauce but 2 tbls in the recipe. I only used the 1 tsp because I think 2 tbls is a bit much. I also only used 1 tbls of brown sugar because we don’t like it that sweet.
Thanks for the recipe! Looking forward to having these tomorrow!
Jordyn says

We enjoyed our sloppy joes! We even have more for dinner tomorrow. It tasted great. I may use a bit less brown sugar. I also loved that it was so easy to make and much better than canned sauce. Finally, it was economical at a time when dinner on a dime is reality!
froosie says
How much Worcestershire do you use? You have 1 tsp in the picture but then in your printed recipe it says 2 tbsp. Thank you.
Layne Kangas says
Whoops, I’m sorry about that! I just got it corrected… it’s two tablespoons. Enjoy!!
Lisa S says
Your instructions never say when to add the 8oz of tomato sauce!
Layne Kangas says
Hi, Lisa – you add it in step three as you’re making the sauce. Enjoy!
Diane says
Thanks a lot Stephanie…I decided to try this homemade sloppy joe recipe since I had all of the ingredients…now I have to always make homemade, this spoiled everyone so I can’t cheat using the can anymore! Haha seriously, this was perfect – just tasted so “fresh”…I guess because using all fresh ingredients lol! And I don’t know why I never buttered and toasted the (good bakery) buns before, that made all the difference. Thank you for sharing this and I’ll be making this recipe from now on when we want sloppy joes!
Suzanne says

Great recipe! I’ve used Manwich sloppy joe sauce before and this was much better. I used ground turkey and 1T of sugar vs 3T but did everything else the same. Family loved it!

The sauce in this recipe was so flavorful, we enjoyed every bite!
Mary Metzinger says
Can’t wait to try it. Got 5 lb of ground beef cheap ($2.99/lb). Going to brown it and put in the Crock Pot. Yes, all 5#! After I cool it, I’m going to package it in 1# portions and freeze it for quick suppers or weekend meals. Thanks!

Simple & delicious! Super easy to make and my family of 7 gobbled them up! We had to double the recipe & I added some diced carrots in with the onions for a little more veggies! I will definitely make them again!

Just made your recipe last night! made everything as you said, and I also added 1/2 lentils–a great way to sneak in a little more nutrition without the family staging a coup.

Best I’ve ever had! Than you
Donna says
This is a great recipe, easy to make and so much better that using the can or powder mix.. will definitely make it again
Marianne says
This is my new favorite sloppy joe recipe. I love the tanginess! I didn’t see the point of simmering the sauce without the meat so I added sauce ingredients as soon as the meat was done and simmered it on super low heat with the lid slightly ajar until it was thick so the meat was nice and tender. Great recipe. 👍
Mary says
Great recipe. Grandkids loved them. Next time I would only add 2 tbls of brown sugar. It was quite sweet.
Lisa says
I will never buy canned sauce again. Never knew how easy it was! Thank you for a great recipe. My family loved it!

Claudia Bhe says
This Came out delicious. Looking for a different exciting surprise dinner for the hubby on a week night and this turned out so good! I don’t measure i eye everything. Only thing I purposely skimped on is the brown sugar, I did about 1.5 tablespoons. The balance was spot on. This will be a go to meal. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a homemade SJ recipe!
Marcie Fletcher says
absolutely amazing recipe. my kids loved it!
Deborah says
Wonderful flavor. I made this with ground turkey! It was so good.
Mcs says
the only sub I made was can of tomato and green chili instead of tomato soup. I browned Meat , drained and added Meat and tomato to food processor to break up tomato and make the ground beef the consistency I like. Added back to skillet and proceeded per recipe. It was fantastic 5 star…..
Yisenia says
Was a hit with the fam. So delicious!
Deb says

Nancy says
These were amazing! I have never eaten a sloppy joe as I didn’t care for them in school! I wanted a second one!
Krista says
I just want to you to know how much I appreciate the layout of this blog!!!! It is so clear and to the point! I didn’t have to scroll through 20 pages to get to the ingredients! I will absolutely be making these for dinner tonight. Have a great day.
Layne Kangas says
Awesome, thank you for the kind words! Have a great night and enjoy the sloppy joes! ♥
lisa c says
Very good! As usual, I improvised somewhat: I used a can of diced tomatoes since I had no tomato sauce; I used stone ground just to finish the container, apple cider vinegar instead of white vinegar, added 1-2T green chili, and used approximate quantities of W. sauce and ketchup to taste. Instead of hamburger I used ground roast (I used a hand-crank meat grinder to grind some not-so-tender roast beef, just like my grandma used to do!!). Despite the substitutions I think it was still very much like the recipe and it was really good. Incidentally, I served it with the suggested baked mac & cheese (to which I also gave 5 stars). A meal worth repeating.
Kathy M says
We love this recipe. I won’t ever make another kind of sloppy joe again. It’s a keeper!
Raul says
+diced green pepper
Jessica says
I made this recipe a little healthier for my diabetic needs by using a sugar alternative and making my own sauce with tomato paste. I do also add some additional seasonings, but that’s just personal preference. I’ve made it several times now and my husband requests it on a weekly basis. It’s so, so good. Thanks for this great recipe!!
Kathy B says
Same as the comment above. We love this recipe. I won’t ever make another kind of sloppy joe again. It’s a keeper!
Ashley Dubolsky says
Can you use distilled white vinegar in place of white vinegar?
Can’t wait to make this for dinner.
Michelle says
This recipe was spot on! I had to double it because I had a fifteen ounce can of tomato sauce. Thank you.
Susan Ashlry says
Much like our family recipe but I add brown Bella mushrooms, sautéed and finely chopped carrots. Gives a delicious flavor and texture.
And use apple cider vinegar. I mix sauce separately to get flavor I desire…then add to meat and onions.
Anita L Kern says
Loved it!
Lori says
This is one of the best sloppy joe recipes I have ever tasted! I didn’t sit the beef aside like it says. I melted the butter right in with the beef and added all ingredients. I used onion powder instead of an onion. I will definitely be making this again!
Lisa Hibbert says
The best sloppy joe recipe I’ve ever tried. My kids don’t normally care for sloppy joes. They loved these. Quick, easy, delicious, and kid approved!

Joanne Leonard says
The family loved it! I added a little chili powder to give it a little zing and it was awesome. I will be making this again. I bought Kaiser rolls for it so the bun can hold up to the meat.
Kee says
I had no way to get to the store and had no Manwich available but had promised everyone yummy sloppy joes. This was the recipe that introduced me to this site. I hastily followed the instructions, and it was super easy to follow and get together in a pinch while browning meat. It came out wonderfully and I’ve made it multiple times since.
Morgan says
One of our family’s favorite recipes!
Pat says
My husband doesn’t like tomato sauce. Is there another way to make a sauce for sloppy joes?
Layne Kangas says
Hi, Pat – I’ve only ever made it like this. My husband hates tomatoes but loves my sloppy joes so maybe your husband will as well. Good luck!
Dave says
Hi Pat,
You might look for a Maid-Rite Sandwich recipe or Loose Meat Sandwich recipes, they are kinda like Sloppy Joe’s but with no tomato sauce or ketchup. Hope this helps.
Greg Divine says
I made this for dinner tonight , I doubled it right out the gate and I’m glad I did . Everyone absolutely loved it ! Never gonna buy canned Sloppy Joe again , I’m sold on this recipe. I was really struggling with wanting a sloppy joe or a chili dog so had one of each . Yummy! Can’t wait to pick another recipe of yours and this one is without a doubt a keeper. Thank you so much for sharing the recipe with us! Next time I might even triple this recipe, it’s that good . By the way , I love the name of your food blog , Space Ships and Laser Beams . Being an X-Files geek it appeals to me , I can hear the theme music in my head now . Great recipe!
Lisa Fowler says
Delicious. I will never use a can again!
DianeN says
Love this recipe. Grandkids said best ever. Do have a question though. Does the nutritional value include the buns?
Mary says
This is the easiest and best tasting sloppy joe recipe ever! The only thing I change is I don’t use chopped onions (so my onion hating daughter doesn’t freak out!), I just add a little more onion powder. I also use the same sauce base and substitute lentils for the meat if I have vegetarians over for dinner, still tastes great with ground beef or lentils! Thank you for an easy and tasty sloppy joe recipe!
Jeanne says
These were delicious. Haven’t had sloppy joes in years and I saw this and it settled “what’s for dinner” tonight. My husband said to definitely make them again. However, I don’t think there is any way this would feed 6 people unless they were pretty young. There are only 2 of us and it is almost gone. Maybe enough for 1 1/2 sandwiches. There goes my freezing it for next time!
Burlett says
Very easy! Better than Manwich by a mile! Have made this several times and it’s a hit with my family. We like it with just a bit more brown sugar.
Patsy says

I really wanted sloppy joes and didn’t have my usual mix or can so I went on Pinterest and found this recipe!
