  • 1 ½ ounces Bailey’s Irish Cream liqueur
  • ½ ounce Kahlua coffee liqueur
  • 1 ounce vodka
  • ½ ounce gingerbread syrup
  • 1 small scoop vanilla ice cream

Garnish:

  • Extra cream whipped topping, thawed

Gingerbread Cocktail Substitutions and Additions

If you’re looking to tailor the gingerbread vodka cocktail to better suit your preferences or what you have on hand, here are some thoughtful substitutions and additions you can consider.

Kahlua Coffee Liqueur: If Kahlua isn’t available, any coffee-flavored liqueur or even a shot of strong brewed coffee could work. This swap will still impart that rich coffee flavor that complements the gingerbread syrup.

Gingerbread Syrup: Make a quick homemade version by simmering water, granulated sugar, a bit of molasses, and ground ginger. Or, use maple syrup mixed with ginger spice for a quick fix.

Vanilla Ice Cream: If ice cream isn’t your thing or you’re looking for a lighter option, substitute with heavy cream to maintain that creamy consistency without the thickness of ice cream.

Ground Cinnamon: Swap out cinnamon for nutmeg or allspice for a different kind of warmth that still feels right at home in this cocktail.

Gingerbread Man Candy Topping: If you can’t find gingerbread candy, any festive candy or even a small cinnamon stick could serve as a charming garnish, adding a bit of spice and visual appeal.

How To Make This Gingerbread Cocktail

STEP ONE: Start by collecting all your ingredients. Make sure the vanilla ice cream is out of the freezer and softening as you organize the other components. This preparation ensures a smoother mixing process, allowing the ice cream to blend seamlessly with the liquors and syrup.

Pro Tip: Chill your martini glass in the freezer for about 15 minutes before you start making the cocktail. A chilled glass will keep your drink colder and more refreshing for longer.

STEP TWO: Fill your cocktail shaker about halfway with ice cubes. The ice is crucial as it dilutes the drink slightly while chilling, which is key to achieving the perfect consistency and temperature.

Pro Tip: Use large ice cubes if possible, as they melt slower and will chill the cocktail without watering it down too quickly.

STEP THREE: Pour in the Bailey’s Irish Cream liqueur, Kahlua Coffee Liqueur, vodka, and gingerbread syrup over the ice. Then, add the softened scoop of vanilla ice cream.

The order doesn’t affect the taste, but adding the ice cream last helps it to start melting right into the liquors and syrup.

Pro Tip: Measure the liquors with a jigger to ensure precise proportions. Accurate measurements are crucial for maintaining the balance of flavors in the cocktail.

STEP FOUR: Secure the lid on the cocktail shaker and shake vigorously for 20-30 seconds. You’re aiming for a thick, creamy consistency, with the ice cream fully incorporated into the drink.

Pro Tip: Shake the cocktail until the shaker feels cold to the touch, which indicates that the drink is well-chilled.

STEP FIVE: Strain the gingerbread cocktail into the chilled martini glass. Ensure a smooth pour to maintain the creamy texture without any ice chunks.

If you prefer a finer strain, use a mesh strainer to catch any residual ice fragments.

STEP SIX: Garnish your gingerbread cocktail with a dollop of whipped cream, a sprinkle of ground cinnamon, and a gingerbread man candy. The garnish not only adds visual appeal but also enhances the overall flavor with every sip.

Pro Tip: When applying the whipped cream, try to make it peak slightly with a spoon for that perfect dessert-like appearance.

Troubleshooting This Gingerbread Cocktail Recipe

Cocktail is too watery.
Make sure you’re using large ice cubes and shaking for no more than 30 seconds to minimize dilution.

Cocktail isn’t creamy enough.
Be sure the vanilla ice cream is at the perfect softness—too frozen and it won’t blend smoothly; too melted and it won’t thicken the drink.

Flavors are too muted or overpowering.
Double-check your measurements to ensure the right balance of each ingredient, particularly the gingerbread syrup and liquors.

Cocktail is too sweet.
Adjust the amount of gingerbread syrup slightly, and consider using a less sweet vanilla ice cream or whipped cream topping.

Ice cream clumps in the cocktail.
Allow the ice cream to soften for a few minutes before adding it to the shaker, ensuring it will blend more evenly with the other ingredients.

Successfully making this creamy cocktail is only half the fun—the other half is enjoying it at its best, whether that’s immediately or saved for later. Here’s how you can ensure your gingerbread vodka martini retains its delicious quality, even if you need to prepare it in advance or store leftovers

MAKE AHEAD: The gingerbread cocktail can be prepped ahead of time to some extent. Mix all the liquid ingredients—Bailey’s Irish Cream liqueur, Kahlua Coffee liqueur, vodka, and gingerbread syrup—in a sealed container and store in the refrigerator.

Wait to add the ice cream and do the final shake until you are ready to serve to maintain the creamy consistency and prevent separation.

IN THE FRIDGE: For best results, it’s recommended to mix the cocktail fresh. However, if you have leftovers, they can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Keep the cocktail in a tightly sealed container.

The texture may change slightly due to the ice cream melting, so it’s best enjoyed fresh.

IN THE FREEZER: Freezing the gingerbread cocktail isn’t recommended due to the dairy components, which may separate and crystallize, affecting the smooth texture of the drink. If you need to extend its shelf life beyond a day, freezing is not advised.

Ingredients

Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ ounces Bailey’s Irish Cream liqueur
  • ½ ounce Kahlua Coffee liqueur
  • 1 ounce vodka
  • ½ ounce gingerbread syrup Torani brand
  • 1 small scoop vanilla ice cream softened at room temperature for 3-4 minutes (scoop size approximately 1 ounce, or 3 tablespoons, from a 2 inch wide cookie scoop) (Haagen-Dazs brand vanilla bean ice cream)

Garnish:

  • Extra cream whipped topping thawed
  • Ground cinnamon
  • Gingerbread man candy topping Wilton brand for cupcake and cookie decorating

Instructions

  • To a cocktail shaker filled with ice (approximately 1 cup) add the Bailey’s Irish cream Liqueur, Kahlua Coffee Liqueur, vodka, gingerbread syrup and vanilla ice cream.
  • Add the lid to the cocktail shaker, and shake vigorously for 20-30 seconds or until the cocktail consistency is thick, creamy and well combined.
  • Strain the gingerbread cocktail into a 6 ounce martini glass.
  • Garnish the gingerbread cocktail with a dollop of extra creamy whipped topping, a pinch of ground cinnamon and a gingerbread man candy for decoration.

Notes

  • The gingerbread syrup can be found where other coffee, or drink, flavorings are carried in your grocery store. The gingerbread flavor is more readily available during the winter holiday season. You can find it year round at online retailers such as Amazon. Trani brand is a well known brand however, other brands do make gingerbread syrup. Be sure to choose one that is meant for drink flavoring. Do not use an extract made for baking in this recipe.
  • You can garnish your gingerbread cocktail with a homemade sweetened whipped cream, whipped to soft peaks, if you prefer not to use a store bought version that comes in a tub, or squirt canister.
  • We suggest using a good quality vanilla ice cream as it adds to the rich and creamy texture of the cocktail as well as adding a subtle vanilla flavor to balance the spices of the gingerbread syrup.
  • If you can not find the gingerbread candy toppers to use as decoration, you can certainly omit them. However, a small gingerbread man cookie will also be a great substitution for a decorative garnish for your cocktail.
