Why This Recipe

  • While many similar cakes can become overly dense or soggy, ours balances the moisture perfectly, ensuring a rich, fluffy texture throughout.
  • Our process of chilling the cake after soaking it with caramel and sweetened condensed milk ensures that the flavors fully infuse. This creates an indulgent experience you won’t find with other fast-prep versions.
  • We focus on simplifying the process with minimal preparation and a cook time that suits most slow cookers perfectly. This makes our recipe not only easy but also reliably delicious every time.
  • The make-ahead option allows you to prepare it in advance, letting the flavors develop overnight.

With a heavenly blend of ingredients, including chocolate cake mix, caramel sauce, and whipped cream, you’ll savor each morsel of this slow cooker cake.

Here’s everything you’ll need to make it:

  • 15.25-ounce box of Triple Chocolate Fudge cake mix (Betty Crocker Delights Super Moist)
  • 3 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1¼ cups of water
  • ½ cup of canola oil
  • 14-ounce jar of caramel sundae sauce (Hershey’s)
  • 14-ounce can of sweetened condensed milk
  • 8-ounce tub of Cool Whip whipped topping, thawed
  • ½ cup of Heath Bar English Toffee bits
  • Additional drizzle of caramel sauce (from a squeeze bottle), optional garnish

Substitutions And Additions

HEATH BARS: Heath Toffee Bits can be found in bags in the baking section where you find chocolate chips. If your store does not carry them, you can certainly use whole Heath Bars and finely chop them yourself.

CAKE MIX: You can use any rich chocolate boxed cake mix for this slow cooker better than sex cake recipe. I find that the “super moist” varieties work best. Devil’s Food cake mix is a great substitution. You will need to adjust the amounts of eggs, water, and canola oil according to the brand of box mix you use.

WHIPPED TOPPING: You can make your whipped topping from scratch, but you will need to use a stabilized whipped cream recipe. If you do not use a stabilized recipe, then your whipped cream will quickly be absorbed by the cake. The store versions in the tubs hold up much better in this recipe.

How To Make This Crockpot Better Than Sex Cake Recipe

STEP ONE: Spray the bottom and sides of the insert of a 6-quart slow cooker with baker’s spray.

STEP TWO: In a large mixing bowl, using a handheld mixer on medium speed, combine the Triple Chocolate Fudge cake mix, eggs, water, and canola oil for 2 minutes.

STEP THREE: In a small bowl, add the caramel sundae sauce and sweetened condensed milk. Stir until fully combined. Set aside.

Some brands of caramel sauce are larger than 14 ounces. If so, you can reserve the remaining caramel sauce and use that as an additional garnish.

STEP FOUR: Pour the cake batter into the prepared slow cooker insert. Cover with the lid. Place a piece of paper towel under the lid to keep the condensation from dripping onto the cake.

Set the slow cooker to HIGH, and cook for 2 to 3 hours. The cake is done when a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

You will need to start checking for doneness at 2 hours, as every slow cooker may heat differently, and you can not calibrate them. Some have hot spots, or some brands may heat hotter than others.

If your slow cooker is not a large 6-quart size, your cake will be thicker and take longer to cook. You will have to adjust the cooking time accordingly.

poke holes all over the cake surface using a wooden sooon

STEP FIVE: While the cake is hot, poke holes all over the cake’s surface using the handle of a wooden spoon.

If you start poking your holes and the cake sticks to the wooden spoon, allow your cake to cool slightly before continuing.

STEP SIX: Slowly pour the reserved caramel-sweetened condensed milk mixture over the entire cake. You may need to stop for a moment to allow the mixture to seep into all the holes of the cake before adding the remainder of the mixture.

STEP SEVEN: Allow the cake to cool on the counter, then remove the slow cooker insert and place it into the refrigerator, covered with plastic wrap, to chill for at least 2 hours.

STEP EIGHT: Once the chocolate poke cake has chilled, spread the thawed whipped topping in an even layer over the top of the cake. Sprinkle the Heath bits over the entire top of the whipped topping. You can also add the additional optional drizzle of bottled caramel topping if desired.

This better than sex cake is best if enjoyed within the first 24-48 hours after it is made. This is a very moist cake; therefore, the longer the cake sits, the more the cake will soften from the added caramel and sweetened condensed milk.

How To Serve

This ultra-decadent cake is indulgent enough on its own, but if you would like a little something extra, serve it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side or a frosty chocolate milkshake to drink.

Coffee, tea, or a vanilla latte would also make a lovely companion to this decadent dessert.
