Chocolate Cherry Cookies Ingredients
Chocolate cherry cookies are an absolute delight for the senses. When you bite into one, the rich flavor of the chocolate sugar cookie cascades over your tongue and blends perfectly with the intense sweetness of the juicy cherry on top.
Every bite of these delicious cookies is better than the last, making it almost impossible to have just one.
To make these decadent cookies, you’ll need:
- 1 (17.25-ounce) bag of sugar cookie mix
- ⅓ cup of cocoa powder
- ¼ cup of unsalted butter, softened
- 4 ounces of cream cheese, softened
- 1 large egg
- ¼ cup of heavy cream
- ½ cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 26 maraschino cherries, drained
Substitutions And Additions
DRIZZLE: Instead of melting the chocolate chips and heavy cream, you can use white candy melts and melt them according to package directions before placing them in the Ziploc bag to drizzle on top of the maraschino chocolate cherry cookies. The white drizzle against the chocolate cookie gives them a more festive look.
How To Make This Chocolate Cherry Cookies Recipe
Since the dry ingredients in this delicious cookie recipe start with a pre-made sugar cookie mix, all you will need to do is add a few extra ingredients before popping them in the oven to bake.
Once they are warm out of the oven, you’ll create an indent with the back of a spoon before topping the cookie with a juicy cherry. Add some chocolate drizzle and dig in!
Follow our step-by-step instructions below.
STEP ONE: Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
OUR RECIPE DEVELOPER SAYS
Lining your baking sheets with parchment paper helps the maraschino cherry chocolate cookies bake evenly and prevents them from spreading too much. It also makes cleanup a breeze!
STEP TWO: In a medium bowl, mix the sugar cookie mix and the cocoa with a fork until well combined.
STEP THREE: Using an electric mixer, beat butter, cream cheese, and egg together in a large bowl.
It will take about two to three minutes until the mixture is smooth and creamy.
STEP FOUR: Mix in the dry ingredients on low speed until a stiff dough forms.
You may need to use a sturdy spatula to mix in the last bits of dry ingredients if the dough is too stiff for your mixer.
STEP FIVE: Scoop the cookie dough balls onto the baking sheet using a small cookie scoop. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes.
PRO TIP:
Oven temperatures vary and may need to be recalibrated periodically to ensure they are accurate. Make sure to check your cookies at the lower end of the recommended baking time.
STEP SIX: As soon as you remove the cookies from the oven, use the back of a teaspoon to make an indentation in the center of each cookie.
Set them aside to cool.
STEP SEVEN: While the cookies are cooling, place the heavy cream in the microwave for 30 seconds until heated to boiling.
Add the chocolate chips and stir until melted and smooth.
Transfer the melted chocolate into a small sandwich bag and snip the corner to make a piping bag. Set aside.
STEP EIGHT: When the cookies are cool, place a small amount of the melted chocolate in the well, then place a maraschino cherry inside each cavity.
Drizzle the remaining chocolate on each cookie. Let the chocolate set for five minutes or until firm before serving.
PRO TIP:
If you are cooling your cookies on a wire rack, you can place the rack over a piece of parchment paper on your counter, and when you drizzle your ganache, the excess drips will fall on the parchment paper and make clean up much easier.

Storing This Cherry Chocolate Cookies Recipe
ON THE COUNTER/IN THE FRIDGE: Store any leftover chocolate-covered cherry cookies in a single layer or multiple layers with wax paper between each layer.
The cookies can be stored in a Ziploc bag or an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator for two to three days.
IN THE FREEZER: We don’t recommend freezing these chocolate maraschino cherry cookies as the chocolate ganache won’t have the same texture once thawed.
Add our heavenly chocolate cherry cookies to your cookie jar all year round. Dotted with juicy maraschino cherries, loaded with chocolatey goodness, and topped with a sweet cherry and rich chocolate ganache, this is the perfect cookie.
