SUBSTITUTIONS AND ADDITIONS
AVOCADO: You can substitute tomato for the avocado if you cannot find any in season. Or what about spreading guacamole on the sandwich instead?
TOMATO: While you could replace the avocado in the sandwich, how about a bacon avocado tomato sandwich? Don’t forget to add a sprinkle of salt and black pepper to your tomato for extra flavor.
CHEESE: Try Monterey Jack, Pepper Jack cheese, American cheese – any cheese you like on your grilled sandwiches.
MEAT: This sandwich would be even tastier with meat on it. Pick turkey breast, grilled chicken, or ham for tasty options.
BREAD: You can choose your favorite bread for this bacon cheese avocado sandwich. Sandwich bread, French bread, or Italian bread, or pick something gourmet such as focaccia bread. How about thinking outside of the box for a bacon croissant sandwich?
For lower carb alternatives, use our cloud bread or this chaffle recipe instead of bread!
VEGGIES: You could also add other thinly sliced veggies. For a tangy bite, try red onion.
SPICE: Add a bit of spice with hot sauce or your favorite flavored mayonnaise. For a smoky hint, try chipotle sauce.
How To Make This Bacon Avocado Sandwich Recipe
OUR RECIPE DEVELOPER SAYS
For the crispiest bacon, bake it in the oven on a baking tray. Check out our oven-baked bacon recipe. You can cook the bacon the night or even the day before. Either way you cook the bacon, just make sure to let it sit on a paper towel before adding it to your sandwich to drain the bacon fat, so you don’t end up with an extra greasy sandwich.
STEP ONE: Generously butter 1 side of each of the 4 slices of bread, and set them aside.
STEP TWO: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat.
STEP THREE: Place 2 of the slices of bread butter side down in the heated skillet.
STEP FOUR: Lay 1 slice of cheese on each slice of bread in the skillet.
PRO TIP:
The best way to make sure your cheese melts nicely is if you let it sit out for 15 to 20 minutes before you start making these.
STEP FIVE: Lay 4 of the halved bacon strips on top of the cheese.
STEP SIX: Evenly divide the thickly sliced avocado halves and lay them on top of the bacon.
PRO TIP:
To slice an avocado, cut it in half by running the knife around the pit and twisting the two halves to open the avocado. Remove the pit and scoop the flesh from the skin of each half.
Use ripe avocados for the best flavor. Avoid using unripe avocados. Avocados should give just slightly when squeezed gently. Avoid avocados that feel like they have fluid under the skin. A few brown spots in the avocado flesh are just fine and perfectly edible.
STEP SEVEN: Lay the remaining 2 slices of cheese on top of each of the avocado slices.
STEP EIGHT: Finally, top each sandwich with the remaining slices of buttered bread.
STEP NINE: Using a spatula, gently press down on the tops of the sandwiches.
STEP TEN: Cook for 5 to 7 minutes, flip and cook an additional 5 to 7 minutes on the other side to toast bread.
STEP ELEVEN: Remove the sandwiches from the skillet and slice them in half.
