These Amish cookies have the perfect balance of sweetness, crunch, and softness, all rolled into one bite.

The butter adds a rich flavor, while the combination of powdered sugar and cream of tartar makes these cookies insanely soft and pillowy.

  • 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
  • 4½ cups of all-purpose flour

  • 1 teaspoon of cream of tartar

How To Make This Amish Sugar Cookies Recipe

This simple recipe will have to combine the basic pantry staples listed above before baking the cookies to light golden perfection.

Once cool, you can add your treats to your cookie jar for snacking.

STEP ONE: Preheat the oven to 375°F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper and set them aside.

Parchment paper makes cleanup a breeze, but you can also bake the cookies right on your ungreased cookie sheets.

STEP TWO: In the bowl of a stand mixer, beat together butter, vegetable oil, granulated sugar, and powdered sugar.

STEP THREE: Add the eggs and vanilla and beat for 2 minutes longer, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed.

STEP FOUR: Mix together flour, baking soda, and cream of tartar in a separate bowl.

STEP FIVE: With the mixer running on low speed, add the dry ingredients a couple of spoonfuls at a time until the dough is evenly combined. 

PRO TIP:

The cookie dough does not need to be chilled. It does not make a difference in the spread or consistency of these cookies, but if you want to chill the dough, go ahead!

You can also simply mix and scoop right onto the baking sheets.

STEP SIX: Use a cookie scoop to drop spoonfuls of the dough onto prepared baking sheets. Bake for 7 to 8 minutes until just lightly golden brown on the bottom edges.

PRO TIP:

Oven temperatures vary and may need to be recalibrated periodically to ensure they are accurate. Make sure to check your cookies at the lower end of the recommended baking time.

STEP SEVEN: Transfer baked cookies to a wire rack to cool.
