(Without Crushed Cereal or Sticky Clumps)

This is one of those recipes that’s easy—but there are a few little tricks that make all the difference. Here’s how to nail it:

Use a big bowl.
Sounds simple, but it’s a game-changer. A roomy bowl gives you space to gently toss the cereal without crushing it into crumbs.

Pour the coating around the sides, not just in the middle.
Drizzle the warm peanut butter-chocolate mix around the edge of the bowl so it spreads evenly as you fold. No clumps, no mess.

Fold, don’t stir.
Use a silicone spatula and a scoop-and-turn motion to coat the cereal. Be gentle—take your time. Stirring too fast is what breaks the cereal.

Cool before adding sugar.
Let the coated cereal sit for a few minutes until it’s no longer warm to the touch. If you toss it in powdered sugar too soon, the sugar melts and you lose that classic powdery finish.

cereal coated with powdered sugar in the ziploc bag

Use a zip-top bag to coat.
Transfer the cooled cereal to a big zip-top bag, add the powdered sugar, seal it, and shake gently. It coats evenly, keeps your hands clean, and helps avoid pressure that can crush the cereal.

Store it right.
Once cooled and coated, keep your puppy chow in an airtight container at room temp. Skip the fridge—it can make it sticky. And if it still feels a bit tacky? Just add a little more powdered sugar and give it another gentle shake.

Butterfinger Puppy Chow

This Butterfinger Puppy Chow is everything you want in an easy, no-bake treat—crunchy, chocolatey, peanut buttery, and packed with bits of that unmistakable Butterfinger crunch.
Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 1 minute
Total Time 11 minutes
Servings 14

Ingredients

  • 7 cups Rice Chex Cereal, or store brand version
  • 1 cup semi sweet chocolate chips
  • ½ cup creamy peanut butter
  • ¼ cup salted butter
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 18 fun size Butterfinger candy bars, 15 crushed and 3 roughly chopped for garnish
  • 1 ¼ cup powdered sugar, sifted

Instructions

  • Add the cereal to an extra large bowl.
  • In a microwave safe bowl, combine the chocolate chips, peanut butter and butter. Microwave on high for 1 minute, and stir well until the mixture is completely melted and smooth.
  • Stir in the vanilla until well combined.
  • Drizzle the chocolate peanut butter mixture over the cereal. Gently stir to coat the cereal.
  • Stir in the 15 crushed Butterfinger candy.
  • For the powdered sugar step, you can sprinkle the powdered sugar over the coated cereal mixture and stir, or you can add the coated cereal to an extra large (2 gallon) ziplock bag and shake. (The ziplock bag is what I went with as it keeps the powdered sugar contained and makes cleaning up much easier)
  • After the cereal is coated in the powdered sugar, spread out on a baking sheet to dry. Just before serving sprinkle in the 3 chopped fun size candy bars.

Notes

  • Milk chocolate chips, dark chocolate chips or even candy melts can be substituted for the semi sweet chocolate chips.
  • A combination of rice, corn and wheat chex can be used for different textures.
  • Fun add-ins can be added, such as mini peanut butter cups, Reese’s pieces and Butterfinger balls.
