This easy better than sex cake is one of my favorite desserts. We start with a simple chocolate cake and then use a wooden spoon to poke holes in it. Sweetened condensed milk and caramel sauce are poured over the cake and then it’s topped with Cool Whip and crushed Heath bars before being served. It’s irresistible!

This delectable cake is known by many names including Better Than Best Cake, Almost Better Than Sex Cake, Better Than Anything Cake or Better Than You Know What Cake. If you’ve heard of Sex in a Pan, this is it…or perhaps you know it as Robert Redford Cake or Better Than Robert Redford Cake.

No matter what it is called, the result is no ordinary chocolate cake. This is a moist, homemade better than sex cake that everyone will love. The rich, buttery caramel sauce adds to the moist texture of this confection. Then there’s the topping with whipping cream, more coffee AND heath bar pieces. Heavenly.

Ingredients For Better Than Anything Cake

A piece of cake on a tray

You will need:

  • Devil’s food chocolate boxed cake mix plus ingredients listed on the cake box
  • 1 14-ounce can of sweetened condensed milk
  • jar of caramel sauce
  • 8 ounce tub of Cool Whip
  • 4 Heath candy bars

BTS Cake Substitutions and Additions

CAKE MIX: Try making this with a different type of chocolate cake mix such as German chocolate cake instead of devil’s food cake mix. Or, when you mix the cake, only use two eggs and add a half-cup of whiskey.

SAUCE: Substitute hot fudge topping for the caramel sauce.

TOPPINGS: There are lots of sweet nothings that can be added to top of the cake: chocolate chips, Reese’s peanut butter cups, Skor bars, Butterfingers, Snickers, Oreos, heath toffee bits.

WHIPPED CREAM: You can either use a whipped topping such as Cool Whip or make your own homemade fresh whipped cream using our recipe found here.

How to make Better than Sex Cake

STEP ONE: Bake cake according to the package directions for a 9×13 cake. When the cake is done baking, use the end handle of a wooden spoon and poke holes all throughout the cake (just like we do in this recipe for Turtle poke cake, too!) (just like we do in this recipe for Turtle poke cake, too!).

PRO TIP: It’s best to make the holes in the cake while it is still slightly warm because as it cools, the crust on top of the cake will crumble more easily.

STEP TWO: Pour the sweetened condensed milk all over the top of the cake and spread it out.

PRO TIP: When you’re pouring the cream into the holes, tap the pan on the counter a few times to get rid of any air bubbles and make sure the cream fills the holes completely.

STEP THREE: Then pour caramel sauce over the top of the cake and spread it out to cover the entire cake.

STEP FOUR: Refrigerate the cake for at least two hours.

STEP FIVE: Spread the Cool Whip on top of the cooled cake and sprinkle with chopped Heath bars.

Serving Better Than Sex Dessert

Our better than sex cake is utterly decadent and is a perfect treat to serve for a special occasion or for no occasion at all. Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side for a truly indulgent dessert.

Serve with our iced tearaspberry iced teasweet peach iced tea, or our southern strawberry sweet tea on the side to wash it all down.

Storing Better Than Anything Cake

IN THE FRIDGE: If have any leftovers of this cake, you’ll want to store it covered in plastic wrap in the fridge until you’re ready to serve again.

IN THE FREEZER: You can also freeze this better than sex cake recipe. Tightly cover with plastic wrap and then cover with aluminum foil for up to 3 months. Allow the cake to thaw in the refrigerator before serving.

Such a tasty cake. I didn’t have heath bars on hand so used mini chocolate chips, toffee bits and chopped and toasted pecans for the topping. I’ve had different variations of this recipe, but this one was the best. It’s a keeper for sure.

      • Amy says

Hi!! Want to make this for a family reunion but are traveling the day it’s needed (3ish hour trip). Was planning to make the cake the day before and top it with whip cream when we get there. After the initial 2 hour refrigeration with the condensed milk and caramel, does it need to stay refrigerated until it’s needed? Will it do ok on a 3 hour car ride?
        Thanks!!

  2. Faye M Coco says

You can also use the butterscotch or hot fudge sauce in a jar, I use chopped pecans, on top, but even heath bar pieces, butterfingers, stickers cut up, whatever you desire! Faye c

  3. Heather says

Just made this cake for my boyfriend’s birthday.. his birthday is in 2 days, do you think it’ll be soggy if it sits in the fridge until then?? I haven’t put the top layer on yet.

  4. Celeste says

    5 stars
This dessert came out amazing. I do have to say it is super sweet and rich, but worth it. Thank for the recipe, I was looking for something different and this was perfect!

  5. Lisa says

What size Heath bars are you using? I couldn’t find the regular candy bars so bought a bag of miniatures. How many do you think I should use?

    • Layne Kangas says

I’m not sure how big the mini bars are compared to regular size. We use four regular size ones so I would guess maybe you would need 8-12 mini ones! Although, really, you can’t go wrong! Enjoy 🙂

  6. Sarah says

Do you stick it in the fridge as soon as you put the Carmel/condensed milk on, or do you need to let it cool completely first? Also, will it stay good if I do the whole cake part and stick it in the fridge over night, then do the topping the next day?

  7. Queendd says

I’m looking to make this a day or two ahead of time. Would you suggest I bake the cake ahead and then poke the holes and add the toppings the day I’m going to serve it?

    • Layne Kangas says

I think it would change the consistency of the cake since syrup is thinner and sweet and a sauce is thicker and more rich. You could certainly try but I am not certain how well it will work!

  8. Lela says

Going to teach my male friend to make this one If not able to do this he won’t make anything 😜😆👏🏻

Greatest Cake that I’ve ever ate in my entire life. And learned about this cake from my boss Barbara. That made one for me for my birthday. God Bless you Barbara, for turning me on to this cake. And you for the remember of this cake, as well as the recipe.

  10. Begoña says

Hello, I follow your page from another country, the devil’s food is not available here, could you tell me a substitute recipe? Just to know what kind of chocolate cake it is and what consistency it is, thank you very much.

  11. Megan says

Does anyone know if you need to let the cake cool after you poke holes and before you add the caramel? Excited to make this, this Sunday.
    Thank you in advance.

  12. zoe says

Could I make this a day ahead, and add the cool whip the next day?
Or should I just make the cake a day ahead and not add the caramel etc?

  13. Lisa says

    5 stars
I just finished this up and it just turned 12:00a 😳My 15 year old grandson has waited patiently for me to finish! He wanted a piece as soon as I finished it! Thank you so much for this recipe! It’s a Keeper for sure💕☺️

  14. Denise McKinley says

I have Ghirardelli chocolate cake mix and it calls for 2 eggs instead of 3 eggs, which other cakes mixes require. I want to do the whiskey substitute so do I reduce the eggs to only 1 in that case?

      • Denise McKinley says

        5 stars
I went and got a Duncan Hines cake mix instead since I didn’t want to take a chance for a party. Will try Ghirardelli’s with one egg when I make it for the family. I’ll let you know how it goes. Thanks!

    • Kelly P. says

      5 stars
I made this for my husband the 2nd week after our honeymoon…he fell in love! Our first month of marriage, he asked for this cake weekly – I was having to give it away to family so that we weren’t eating cake all day, every day. It came in a Betty Crocker cookbook I got for our engagement. It called for a German Chocolate cake mix. Now I want to try it with Devils Food!! Yum!!!

  15. Nilynn says

I think this could be very versatile if you just vary the type of cake mix, sauce and topping. I am thinking of a yellow cake with strawberry syrup and chopped strawberries in place of the candy bar or maybe butterscotch and butterfinger bars

  16. Lori Vogel says

I have used butterfinger bars instead of heath bars. I have used this recipe for over 35 years and it is still a favorite for gatherings.

    • Layne Kangas says

Here are our storage suggestions, enjoy!

  17. Grace Anderson says

This cake looks delicious I have never made it but this recipe definitely makes me want to try it!

  18. CP says

This is the first recipe I received after subscribing to your site and it looks amazing! I am so looking forward to future recipes! I have never had a poky cake, let alone the better than sex cake, but would definitely use a chocolate cake mix and add hot fudge to make it extra yummy, and might use Skor bars instead! Thanks for the recipe!!!!

  19. Cynthia says

    5 stars
While I haven’t made this cake yet, I would make this cake, adding M&Ms along with the Heath bars, chocolate cake mix maybe as I do like Devil’s food cake mix too.

  20. Tawana says

    5 stars
This looks amazing! I’ve never made one of these before and yes I will be trying it soon. It wouldn’t hurt to add some kind of fudge all it will do is make it better mixing fudge and caramel together. As for candy I would want to try Snickers on this cake.

  21. Marilyn says

I made this cake and it was delicious. I made with chocolate cake b ut I skip the heath and put reeces and shaved chocolate

  22. Jamika says

    5 stars
This looks amazing! I will be trying this very soon with caramel and chocolate sauce. Top the cake with Snickers pieces and scoop of ice cream on the side.

  23. Gail Beam says

    5 stars
I would use a chocolate cake mix, with either hot fudge or caramel or maybe half the cake with the caramel and half with hot fudge. The heath bars sound great, but butterfingers, chocolate bars, oreos or other candy or cookies would be good on top too.

  24. Marizol Rodriguez says

    5 stars
Looks delicious. Yes I have made a better then sex cake but I use different ingredients vanilla cake etc

  25. Deborah Campbell says

    5 stars
I would definitely use heath bars with this cake. When I make this cake it is gone in one day my kids love it.

  26. Judy Dicks says

My recipe also calls for a box of instant chocolate pudding. This is layer on top of the caramel sauce and before the whipped topping. I get a lot of requests for it.

  27. cindy says

I’ve made this delicious cake many times and usually use Heath candy bar, and have added the jar of chocolate fudge for extra goodness.

  28. Meredith Leonard says

    5 stars
Always a big hit when I take it to potlucks. Have made it with Snickers and/or Hershey’s Symphony when I couldn’t find Heath bars.

  29. Helen says

    5 stars
I have never made a Better than Sex cake. I would make it in Vanilla because I can’t have chocolate!

  30. Chaly says

  31. Stephanie says

    5 stars

  32. Patti Kirkpatrick says

    5 stars
    OMG!!!! This looks beyond decadent!

Chopped up Heath bars are the way to go!

I want to make it twice, one with chocolate cake mix – once with white cake mix. I think that the chocolate will win, but who knows?

YesI would add hot fudge sauce.

I’ve never made it yet, but there is the optimal word – YET! (LOL!)

  33. Carol says

    5 stars
This cake was delicious! I made this with hot fudge sauce because I didn’t have the Carmel sauce, it turned out so good, thank you! I have never made a better than sex cake!

Love this! I love butterscotch so I’ve switched the caramel with that, the cake is always a crowd fav!!!

  36. Kathy says

    5 stars
This cake is delicious and one of my and my families favorites! Chocolate cake all the way!! I use Heath bars and mini chocolate chips on top. I have used chocolate fudge before but the caramel is the best in my opinion. My birthday is coming up and I just might make my own birthday cake!!

  37. Laura Bucki says

    5 stars
I have made this before and it is so yummy. I always make with a milk chocolate cake mix and Heath Chips on top of whip cream..

  38. Katie says

This looks so good!! I’m not a fan of Heath, but I would crush up some Twix or Snickers on top instead. 😋

  39. Lorie says

    5 stars
This cake is beyond delicious. The one ingredient to make it even more over the top is a drizzle of hot fudge syrup when your ready to serve a piece. A chocolate lovers dream cake!

  40. Desiree Crispin says

    5 stars
I have never made this cake before but I look forward to trying it out with vanilla cake and butterfinger topping instead of heath although I think adding fudge drizzle might over do it

  41. Nancy Fryar says

    5 stars
This cake is delicious!! I have made it with different candy bars on top Butterfinger Snickers, Reese’s cups , etc .I like the caramel topping but wander what a white cake with strawberry topping would taste like ?

  42. Melissa says

    5 stars
I’ve never made a Better than Sex cake so now that I came across this recipe, I’ll have to try making it. All
The ingredients are items my family loves ! I think a vanilla version could work, yet gotta have some fudge to go with it. Heath bars are one of my husbands favorites so I’d keep it topped with that deliciousness ✨✨✨

  43. Tim Wilson says

    5 stars
I’m all about some coffee…try it with instant coffee mixed into your whipped cream, it’s really good!

  44. Vikki Garlick says

    5 stars
I have not made this cake before. I would keep the chocolate fudge cake, the fudge sauce, Cool Whip but, instead of the Heath Bar, I would use toasted coconut and slivered almonds.

  45. Josie Tobias says

    5 stars
I’ve never made it before I can’t wait to make it. I would definitely try it all the ways there is to try it. They all sound yummy. I don’t want to miss out on any ways to make it. .❤

  46. T Chadd says

    5 stars
I’ve been making this cake for years. It was one of my Grandma’s favorites. I use the recipe like it is with one exception. We like it better with Butterfinger bars. So good!

  47. Beverly Pogue says

    5 stars
I’ve never made one but thinking I’d use yellow cake and maybe crushed butterfingers instead😋🤩

  48. Teresa Stopher says

    5 stars
I have made this cake exactly as written.
It is so decadent, nothing needs to be changed! Hot fudge topping would be good, but caramel adds just the right flavor! Heath bars or Toffee Bits make the perfect topping! This makes me so hungry for this tantalizing dessert!!! Off to the kitchen for me!!!

  49. Billy Clark says

    5 stars
Definitely add Heath bar pieces, chocolate cake not vanilla, hot fudge for sure, no I haven’t made it yet but I plan to

  50. Beth says

    5 stars
I haven’t made this cake, but I would definitely try it with a few changes. I would use a deep chocolate cake mix instead of devil’s food. Since I am not a big fan of caramel, I would use a chocolate fudge sauce in the individual slices after it is cut and top it with lots of chocolate goodies! Also, not a fan of Cool Whip, so I would make my own whipped cream. I don’t think this cake will last very long!!!!

  51. Kimberly Newsom says

    5 stars
I have made a better than sex cake before. I use caramel and hot fudge sauce on top of the cake and then drizzle more after topping with cool whip and crushed heath bars.

  52. Jenny Schoel says

    5 stars
This is probably one of my most favorite cakes. It’s so easy to make, refreshing with the lighter frosting/whipped topping, yet satisfies your sweet tooth. It’s great for potlucks or a get together , as it can be made ahead of time and then kept in the fridge.

  53. Alyssa McClaskey says

    5 stars
I’ve never had this cake before, but i would love to try it! Heath bars are one of my favorites so i would leave those top! I would definitely make it a vanilla cake.

  54. Lori Letulle says

    5 stars
I have not made this cake before. I would keep the chocolate fudge cake, the fudge sauce, Cool Whip but, I would use the Heath bar along with other crunchy candy bars.

  55. Dannette M Hollimon says

    5 stars
Looks delicious. I’d take away the heath bars and use another candy bar. Definitely chocolate!!!

  56. Tanya Sands says

    5 stars
As a romance author, I find this recipe very inspiring (so much so that I was able to power through a scene which had mentally blocked me for DAYS). I have have not tried the recipe YET, but with my scene written, what else could I possible do but to pay homage to the muse. I wouldn’t change the candy bar for 1 simple reason: like sex, the candy tempts you to want more, to NEED more. I think the chocolate cake would be the best bet for this recipe. If made right, it would be rich and luscious and sinful; everthing sex is and should be.

By the way, thank you for getting me out of my writer’s block. Was it as good for you as it was for me *wink, wink*

  57. MaryRuth says

I would definitely top with heath bars… chocolate cake, always chocolate. Yes to the hot fudge! Never made one but I’ve eaten one and I’m excited to try it!

  58. Abby Ramsey says

Fantastic cake!! I’ve had this cake before and couldn’t believe how good it was. So glad I now have the recipe!! Thanks.

  59. Doroth Blake says

I have not made this cake yet. I would use Devil’s food cake mix, Carmel sauce and heath bar topping. It looks so good.

  60. Lathie McKinney says

    5 stars
I have made this cake. It has to stay chocolate. I would top it with chocolate syrup. All this may end up being “death by chocolate ” cake.😄

  61. Lathie McKinney says

    5 stars
I have made this cake. It has to stay chocolate fudge cake. I’d use Carmel topping and a candy bar with coconut. Like mounds.

  62. Lynn McIver says

    5 stars
I have never made this cake, but you can bet your bottom dollar, I will be now. Because of many allergies including nuts I would instead use shaved white chocolate and slices of kiwi or toasted coconut💜💜💜

  63. Janette Smith says

    5 stars
I have not made this cake before but it sounds delicious. I would probably leave it as chocolate cake with whipped cream, hot urge sauce nd chopped pecans or walnuts instead of the Heath Bar. I have made another cake called Better Than Sex Cake but the recipe is totally different.

  64. Melina says

    5 stars
I would absolutely make this with my homemade chocolate or vegan vanilla cake as well as homemade whipped topping! Can’t wait to try this one!

  65. Robin York says

    5 stars
I would make this as the recipe says but I would mix the cool whip with softened cream cheese and a half cup if powdered sugar. Ice the cake with this mixture and add the crushed Heath bars on top.

  66. Lorinda Raymond says

    5 stars
I would add a drizzle of hot fudge to the recipe and I would also like to try snickers chopped up and rollo chopped up as well.

  67. Kyrah says

I love this recipe! I thought there was a blurb about how to make it bigger by adding flour and cocoa powder??

  68. Soraya says

    5 stars
Save yourself a slice a cake or it will be gone!! This is such a moist and sweet but sophisticated dessert. Super easy to make would definitely give it a try! 10/10!

  69. Beth Kramer says

    5 stars
The better than sex cake is awesome! A friend made it and I loved it! I made it twice and mine appears to be soggy. It’s still good though. I use a glass pan and pour the milk and caramel right after I poke the holes. Should I wait till the cake cools before pouring in the liquids?

  70. Lynn says

    5 stars
Well, that was a surprise! I needed a cake for a chocoholic guest, and this sure hit the spot! The cake baked so beautifully in my 9×13 pan, puffed up go smoothly, it was a shame to poke it full of holes with the end of a rather thick wooden spoon, but I did! I made sure I filled the holes with the condensed milk and caramel sauce and spread the rest over the cake, put it into the fridge. I did top with crushed Score bars, but of course would omit them if I make it for family since our Grandson has a peanut allergy. This was sticky, chocolatey, and delicious! I didn’t use the Cool Whip, but served it with a lovely vanilla ice cream ball on top and it made for quite a nice presentation! Thank you for such a quick, easy, yet very presentable dessert!

  71. JACKIE says

    5 stars
Can you use homemade whip cream? I haven’t made this cake yet but all the recipes I’ve made have been AMAZING! Thank yall for the recipes

  72. Janel says

Easy and super tasty! Followed the recipe but used coconut condensed milk and added a little vanilla extract and cinnamon to the cake when mixing. was a huge hit! Thanks for a great cake idea!

I Absolutely L❤️VE this cake! It’s always my Go-To dessert to take to any kind of gatherings. It’s sooo moist, not to sweet, very easy to make, fairly cheap to make (approx $10) and it NeVeR lasts. I’m telling you, people WILL devour this cake!!! If you want to sweep someone off their feet, or make them believe you’re an excellent baker (which I am not lol) this cake will do the trick!! Yum-Yum 🤤 It’s a must have for your recipe book!

I am wanting to make trifles in jars for a wedding and freeze. Can I add the cool whip between layers and to the top before freezing?

Very easy and delicious recipe! I melted 1 cup of semi sweet chocolate to condensed milk ~ delightful!❤️Thank you for this recipe

  80. Melissa says

Since you poke holes in the cake while warm do you also pour the condensed milk in right away as well as the caramel sauce? Seems like it will flatten the cake out too much. And also can we use the heath bar crumbles sold by chocolate chips instead of candy bars
