Last week my youngest caught a bug. And worry caught me. In the middle of the night I found myself tiptoeing into his room to check on him “one more time”—several times. For the first time ever, he didn’t even wake up when I took his temperature.
Guess I’m not too different from most moms. I read about a recent survey that said three out of four moms list pediatric fever as their number one concern when caring for their sick children.
It also said all moms ride an emotional rollercoaster when caring for their sick child. That includes feeling nervous, anxious, and protective. Yup. That’s the ride I took.
What made a huge difference for me—and it’s what the survey also discovered—was feeling like I was doing something to help my guy.
Taking his temperature gave me an accurate indication of what was going on inside his miserable-acting little self.

- 1 small rotisserie chicken
- 1 cup diced baby carrots
- 2 stalks of chopped celery
- 1/2 large onion diced
- 3 cloves of diced garlic
- 1 bay leaf
- 1/4 cup white wine
- 8 ounces wide egg noodles
- 8 cups chicken broth
- salt and pepper to taste
- olive oil
- Add 1-2 tablespoons of olive oil to large pot and add diced onions, garlic, carrots, and celery. Season with salt and pepper and cook until veggies begin to soften. Add 1/4 cup white wine and reduce.
- Remove all the chicken from the rotisserie and chop into bite size pieces. Add to veggies and cover with broth. Season again with salt and pepper.
- Bring to simmer for 3-4 minutes; add noodles. Simmer until noodles have cooked through. Remove from heat and let set to cool slightly before serving.
