A few weeks ago, I realized that we were spending a lot of time as a family away from home.
Once I came to this conclusion, I started focusing on more things we could do together at home instead of looking for fun and adventure outside our four walls.
Don’t get me wrong: this mama still likes to go, go, go and explore… but I’m making an effort for us to enjoy quiet time in our own corner of the world more.
And guess what — it’s working!
Our little crew has had so much fun creating projects, building forts, creating treats in the kitchen, reading and watching movies together. With both boys at school during the day, carving out that special family time for activities we love has been even more important.
This is the first year both boys have been in school — Rowen in full day kindergarten and Dax in part day preschool. I miss my two little sidekicks so much while they’re gone. Because of that, I’ve really been looking forward to our long Christmas break so that we get to enjoy extra time together.
Let me tell you: break hasn’t disappointed. It’s been exactly what we’ve needed.
Over the weekend, my mom radar went off — I could tell both boys needed some extra time together.
Does that ever happen with your kids? You can tell they’re a little off, even if they seem fine to most people? That was us last weekend.
Thankfully, I had the perfect activity for us to enjoy together. I know this is an afternoon we’ll repeat again in our remaining days off over holiday break. I think your family would love it, too!
We started by watching an all-new series called Tales of Arcadia: 3Below. It’s now available to stream on Netflix.
It’s a new adventure comedy from DreamWorks Animation and the team behind Trollhunters — another favorite of ours.
3Below is the second chapter of the Tales of Arcadia trilogy. It follows two royal teenage aliens, Aja and Krel, and their bodyguard Vex, as they flee a surprise takeover of their home planet and crash-land on Earth — in Arcadia, the same town where the events of Trollhunters take place.
The trio is now on the run from intergalactic bounty hunters, so they must blend in and adapt to the bizarre world of high school all while attempting to repair their ship to return to and defend their home planet.
It’s a perfect series for the whole family to enjoy together while on holiday break.
On this particular afternoon, the boys readily curled up on the sofa, ready for some extra snuggles and giggles. I think everyone in our family has been especially ready for a break from the normal routine and daily hustle. Being big boys at school all day is a lot of work!
I loved spending time with my three favorite guys to enjoy the show.
When the episode was finished, I suggested a little craft project to enjoy together. I wanted to make slime together, inspired by the character’s alien pet-turned Corgi who is named Luug. He is cute, slobbery and full of laughs.
The boys were overjoyed to agree.

Ingredients to Make Slime
Of course, there are lots of ways to go about making slime. I love to experiment, so I ended up creating our own recipe for this classic kid’s project.
When I was researching options, I saw all sorts of ideas including how to make slime without Borax (which I did) and how to make slime without glue (which I didn’t do).
It’s amazing how many ways there are to create this stuff! Today, I’m going to be showing you how to make slime with glue.
First, let’s gather our supplies:
- 1 4-ounce bottle clear glue
- purple food coloring (I mixed blue and pink)
- 1 tablespoon fine purple glitter
- ¾ teaspoon baking soda
- 1 ½ teaspoons saline contact solution
Since Luug — from 3Below — is purple, I decided to base this easy slime recipe on him. You could definitely get creative with other colors if you so desired.

How to Make Slime
In a bowl, combine the glue, food coloring and glitter. Mix until color is completely mixed into the glue.
Stir in the baking soda.
Add saline solution and stir until it forms slime.
It’ll be sticky at first but the more you play with it the less sticky it’ll become!
My boys absolutely loved this activity — it was the perfect way to spend an afternoon together.
Once they were done playing, we tucked the slime into small jars and screwed the lid on tight so the slime wouldn’t dry out. You could also use a plastic sandwich baggie if you don’t have any empty jars available.
I used a little black and white twine to tie my Luug printable to the jars for the boys. Even though they were just pretending at home, they enjoyed seeing one of their favorite characters.
I can’t help but think what a fun idea for a themed birthday party as well!
I’m looking forward to more lazy days as a family over holiday break. I know there will be more snuggles, more episodes of 3Below on Netflix, and activities together.

Luug’s Slime

Ingredients
- 1 4 ounce bottle clear glue
- purple food coloring I mixed blue and pink
- 1 tablespoon fine purple glitter
- ¾ teaspoon baking soda
- 1 ½ teaspoons saline contact solution
Instructions
- In a bowl, combine the glue, food coloring and glitter. Mix until color is completely mixed into the glue.
- Stir in the baking soda.
- Add saline solution and stir until it forms slime.
