Instructions
Prepare Onions
Peel the outer skin of the onions.

Set Up
Line a baking sheet with heavy-duty aluminum foil. Place a cooling rack over the lined baking sheet.
Line another baking sheet with paper towels for the cooked onion rings.
Heat Oil
Add vegetable oil to a 10 to 12-inch skillet over medium-high heat, filling it to about 1/2 inch depth, or set up your deep fryer. Heat the oil to 365°F.
Prepare Coatings
In a shallow bowl or pie plate, whisk together flour, onion powder, baking powder, paprika, table salt, and black pepper.
In a separate bowl, whisk together milk and egg until well incorporated.
In another separate bowl, whisk together the panko and plain bread crumbs.
Coat Onion Rings
Dredge each onion ring in the flour mixture.
Dip the flour coated onion rings in the milk and egg mixture.
Finally, coat the onion rings in the breadcrumb mixture. Place them on the cooling rack over the baking sheet.
Deep Fryer Method
Heat the oil in your deep fryer to 365*.
Add a single layer of breaded onion rings to the deep fryer basket.
Cook the onion rings for 1 ½ to 2 minutes per side, or until the onion rings are a deep golden brown. Repeat for the remaining onion rings.
Skillet Method
Once the oil reaches 365*, use tongs to carefully add the coated onion rings in batches, ensuring not to crowd the skillet.
Cook for about 2 minutes per side, or until deep golden brown. Monitor the heat to prevent burning.
Transfer cooked onion rings to the paper towel lined baking sheet. Repeat with the remaining onion rings.
Notes
Sweet yellow onions can be substituted for plain yellow onions or white onions
