Ingredients
1¼poundsvery lean ground beef
1cupsweet yellow onion,finely diced
2teaspoonsfresh minced garlic
15.5ouncessloppy Joe sauce
3cupsshredded cheddar jack cheese,divided into 2 cups and 1 cup
1cupbisquick mix,or generic version
2tablespoonbisquick mix,or generic version
1tablespoononion powder
½teaspoonkosher salt
½teaspooncracked black pepper
⅔cupwhole milk
1largeegg,beaten
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 375°F. Lightly spray a 9-inch deep-dish pie pan with nonstick spray. Set it aside.
Using a 4 to 5 quart saucepan over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef, diced onion, and fresh minced garlic for 4 to 5 minutes, stirring often until the ground beef is no longer pink. Remove from the heat.
Add the sloppy joe sauce and stir to combine completely.
Pour the sloppy joe mixture into the prepared baking dish.
Sprinkle the 2 cups of shredded cheese on top of the sloppy joe mixture.
Add the Bisquick mix, onion powder, kosher salt, and cracked black pepper to a medium-sized mixing bowl, whisk to combine.
Stir in the whole milk, beaten egg, and 1 cup of shredded cheese.
Evenly spread the Bisquick mixture over the shredded cheese layer. Bake for 40 minutes or until the topping is golden. Serve while hot.
Notes
For an even quicker cooking time, you can prepare the ground beef and onion mixture ahead of time and keep it in the fridge for up to two days before adding to the pan with the sauce.
You can also bake this dish in a 9x9 or 8x8 baking dish.
You can use a 10-inch cast-iron skillet to cook the ground beef mixture in and bake the pie in.
