Ingredients
3poundsapples,approximately 6 to 7 large (any variety I used Gala and Granny Smith)
1tablespoonlemon juice
2cinnamon sticks
½cupwater
sugar,optional to taste
Instructions
Remove the cores (and peels, if desired) and cut apples into 1-inch pieces.
Place apples in a crockpot. Add lemon juice, cinnamon sticks, and water.
Cook on HIGH for 3 hours, stirring once or twice, if desired. Stirring is not necessary. Remove the whole cinnamon sticks.
Use a potato masher or immersion blender to break down cooked apples into desired texture for the applesauce. A blender will break down the peels quite a bit, but not fully. For a completely pureed applesauce, peel the apples before cooking.
Notes
If you are thinking about putting in added sugar, we would recommend you wait until the applesauce has finished cooking first before deciding if it isn't sweet enough.
Don’t overcook your applesauce, or the apples will start to lose their flavor.
A blender or food processor will break down the peels quite a bit, but not entirely. For a smoother consistency, peel the apples before cooking.
Freeze in portion-sized containers and pop one out for a yummy snack or breakfast as needed.
