  • 2 pounds lean ground beef
  • 1 small yellow onion, diced (about ½ cup)
  • 1 small green pepper, diced (about 1 cup)
  • 2 teaspoons chili powder
  • teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 15 ounces tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 16 ounces refrigerated crescent roll dough sheets
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  • In a 12-inch skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef just until no longer pink. Drain any excess fat.
  • Add the yellow onion, green pepper, chili powder, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Stir and cook for an additional 5 minutes until the onion is translucent.
  • Add the tomato sauce, tomato paste, brown sugar, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir to combine and allow mixture to simmer uncovered for 15 minutes.
  • Open the crescent roll cans and carefully spread out the dough. Pinch together the seams and gently roll the dough with a rolling pin until you have two sheets of dough approximately 9x13 inches in size.
  • Place one of the dough sheets in the bottom of the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly and pushing it up the sides of the dish a little bit. Bake for 7 minutes until the dough begins to turn a light golden color.
  • Spoon the sloppy Joe mixture into the baking dish on top of the baked crescent roll dough. Sprinkle it with shredded cheese.
  • Lay the second dough sheet on top of the cheese layer, stretching it to the edges of the baking dish.
  • Brush milk over the top of the crescent dough and sprinkle with the sesame seeds.
  • Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until the dough is golden brown.
  • Slice into squares and serve.

  • For an even quicker cooking time, ground beef can be cooked ahead of time. Brown ground beef in a large skillet and store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or in the freezer for up to a month.
  • You might be tempted to forgo pre-baking the bottom crescent dough, but don’t skip this step. If you do, the crescent dough on the bottom will not cook fully in the time it takes the top to bake.
  • Don’t worry about your crescent dough laying perfectly; it will bake up just fine even if it’s a bit uneven.
