If you have been around for a while, you know that to promote every new collection, we do photos to promote them. Several have even been dessert tables featured on Sweet Designs by Amy Altas here, here, and here. (Super exciting and flattering!)

With Janelle‘s new vintage train collection, we decided to do something a little different. The reason? As someone who sees a lot of children’s parties, we know the pressure of spending a lot of time and money to make a birthday extra special. We wanted to take a step back and remind everyone of what’s really important — and that you can have style, cuteness, and fun on a budget. Up first is the decor and the food after the jump as well as a few tips about keeping things on a budget.

TIP 1: To keep things inexpensive, create one strong focal point rather than decorating the whole room/house. That way your decor is focused on one area with a huge impact not scattered. In addition to our vintage train party printables, borrow old trunks from neighbors to use them instead of tables to reinforce the look of a platform at a rail station. One of the most impactful and inexpensive things we did is lay duck tape on our hardwoods to create a railway track.

TIP 2: For food, again, inexpensive was the name of the game. Janelle created those super neat train cupcake wrappers so you don’t need to spring for an expensive cake to get high impact. It’s okay if you are not a baker…at all. You can be a buyer instead. Use berries for the coal and mini breadsticks for the logs. We also had cookies, cheese as well as other snacks for the kids. In addition, make turkey/cheddar/cucumber sandwiches to look like trains.

The loot bags we did were a huge hit and cost about $3 per kid. We have to admit that it was very hard to stay disciplined. Even at the 11th hour, we had to resist the urge not to add more desserts. But, the party was a ton of fun for the moms and the kids and it can easily be a birthday party that you will be proud to host.
