Surf’s up party dudes! This budget-friendly, boy surfing birthday party was styled by creative printable designer Alexandria Short, of Funku Monkey designs for her brother Zane.
When the birthday boy requested a surfing themed party in January to celebrate turning seven, his sister thought it would be a fun change from all of the cold weather. (Best of all, they’re ideas you can use any time of year.)
She set to work creating custom surfing themed party invitations and printable décor in a perfect tropical summer themed palette of turquoise, lime green and orange.
Catch the birthday wave as you discover the totally awesome ideas Alexandria put together to save money, but not scrimp on style in this surfing birthday party for her brother.

When it comes to this surfing party, describing it as “simple” or “budget-friendly” doesn’t mean plain or boring. I find the classic and clean styling techniques and perfectly curated props Alexandria implemented to be very refreshing.
I adore Alexandria’s choice of a distressed white hutch, draped with weathered fish netting; it is the perfect display for the colorful beach themed eats in Zane’s snack shack. Alexandria created a beachy feel for the food display with the use of a grass skirt.
It looks great paired with the pops of color in the bunting. Alexandria shopped sales and used coupons for all of the items purchased and even DIYed the glass stand with thrift store finds and a little glue to stay on budget.
Oyster pearls (gumballs), inner tubes (powdered donuts) and goldfish crackers were perfect snack choices to go along with the surfing party theme. Served up in colorful pails, they added a fun pop of color against the weathered white backdrop.
Homemade by Alexandria and her mother, the ocean inspired cake and cupcakes were impressive and definitely helped save budget for other purchases.
Of course, little surfers need to rehydrate after all day in the sun. Alexandria served up milk to quench big thirst. I love the “Surf’s up dude” beverage wrappers and use of twine to add inexpensive, but big impact details.
Orange and white striped paper straws with coordinating straw flags surely made a splash and the blue sugar rims were a bonus treat.
An eye-catching ceiling installment made up of colored lanterns, fish netting and a theme coordinating banner hung overhead and jazzed up the party space.
Bright colored plates set against layers of orange chevron fabric and sand colored burlap set the stage for an enjoyable eating experience.
My favorite detail from the dining table was the centerpieces made from printable décor elements turned into party picks and arranged in sand pails. Alexandria created surfboards, hibiscus flowers and other party related designs to really make the centerpiece coordinate with the theme.
A few scattered shells on the tables brought in another hint of the beach. And of course, the highlight of each place setting was the blue ocean frosted cupcakes with adorable surf themed cupcake toppers.
To ensure the party was totally gnarly, favor bags were ready for little surfers. They were embellished with awesome hang tags with the phrase, “thanks for making my party a splash”.
Alexandria can ride the birthday wave into the sunset after this amazing party.
