Christmas has been in full swing at my house for several weeks. I’m one of those “obsessed” people they warn you about. November 1, the tree goes up and the music starts. Next up is all.the.baking and plenty of cheesy Hallmark Christmas movies. It’s my favorite time of year and it never feels like it lasts long enough. So my extremely reasonable solution is get the celebrating started as soon as possible. Enjoy every second.
We’re proud to partner with Old Spice and Gillette at Walmart. The opinions and text are all mine.
While I’m all about many parts of Christmas, I am not good at shopping early. (We also won’t discuss my truly terrifying wrapping style. It looks like a inebriated t-rex was involved. But I digress.) Maybe it’s because I’m so busy doing all the baking and all the decorating and all the Christmas caroling. Whatever the reason, each year, I am in a last minute rush for gifts. I usually come up with something truly stellar and creative for one or two people. But that’s where the inspiration stops. I wrack my brain to come up with gift ideas for the others on my list. This usually results in some intense last minute shopping where the mail system working is my only chance at Christmas success.
When he was younger, my oldest son Jorryn was the easiest person on my list to shop for. He had lots of interests and the toy options are plentiful for a kid that loves Star Wars. Now that he’s 13, it’s a
little lot more challenging.
Gone are the days of toys. We’re now in the land of trying to be cool. He’s too old for the gifts of his childhood but not old enough for the gifts of his future.
Instead of stressing about what to get, I’m heading to Walmart and stocking up on some great personal care items. Because, hello. Have you smelled a 13 year old boy lately? Lemme tell you: he needs all.the.Old Spice.
Walmart has the Gillette Justice League Gift Pack featuring Batman for $14.88 — because heroes always smell good. You can’t go wrong with the classic Old Spice Swagger Gift of Confidence Gift Pack for $9.88. Both sets include body wash, deodorant and other personal care items.
Another idea I know he’ll love? Peanut brittle. Old fashioned. Homemade. It screams Christmas to me. It’s one of those treats that we only seem to make at Christmas time in my family. And it’s devoured oh-so-fast.
Since I normally say, “share, share, share” … an entire box to himself is a gift I know Jorryn will appreciate. 🙂
Head to Walmart and then your kitchen to tackle those hard to shop for men in your life with these sure to please ideas!
CLASSIC OLD FASHIONED PEANUT BRITTLE
- 2 cups sugar
- 1 cup light corn syrup
- ½ cup water
- 4 cups peanuts I used 2 cups salted Spanish and 2 cups salted regular peanuts
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons baking soda
- 1 tablespoon vanilla
- coarse sea salt
- In a large pot, bring sugar, corn syrup and water to a boil.
- Add peanuts and stir. Continue to boil until temperature reaches hard crack, about 300 degrees. Once it comes close to temperature, it’ll start to brown so stir occasionally to keep it from burning. As soon as it reaches temperature, remove from the heat.
- Stir in butter, vanilla and baking soda.
- Pour onto a large buttered baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Let cool. To remove from the pan and break up the brittle, I twisted the pan slightly to get it to break.
- Break it up into pieces and serve.
