Table of Contents
Swim at your own risk, there’s no lifeguard on duty at this shark-themed party! Kate, at Piece of Cake Parties & Celebrations, planned this celebration for her son, Declan’s, 5th birthday. Bouncing beach balls and soaring seagulls are fun and easy decorating ideas, and a delicious menu of fish and chips plus a birthday cake with a contagious grin make the party food as much fun and games as a day at the beach!

Kate created a cool beach scene with fringed blue crepe paper streamers, beach balls, and seagulls. A shark-themed birthday banner, from Get the Party Started Etsy Shop, hangs from a room-sized muslin window shade. Palm trees, fishing nets over burlap table runners, and a grass table skirt add to the sand-under-your-toes feel. Ellenbrook Party Shop‘s fun balloon towers incorporate the theme colors: shades of blue, with bright pops of red.
We love the shark mini-stools, but my favorite element is the shark that seems to be emerging from the floor. At Declan’s Shark Shack Café, guests helped themselves to a delicious menu: fish and chips in paper cones, and fresh fruit or veggie cups. Upended boxes and a cute little stand, from Lime Tree Kids, are great party food display ideas. At the guest tables, partygoers donned polka-dotted party hats embellished with felt sharks. Kate playfully mixes stripes and dots throughout the party, here using larger striped plates as chargers under the smaller shark plates.
After donning blue leis to complete their beach party look, kids were free to visit the dessert table. At the dessert buffet, a beautiful blue ombre table skirt looks like gentle waves and makes the shark above seem just a little less menacing. Danger: Shark Zone signs are no joke — there are sharks all over this table. Shark’s top individual bottles of “Shark Jelly” and shark cake pops look amazing on a sparkly fabric-covered platter. Awesome shark sugar cookies and several candy choices — including blue gummy sharks –round out this sweet spread. Kate created a separate area for the birthday cake and cupcakes. She made the fantastic, grinning shark cake herself, using a kit from Cake to the Rescue. She also served a variety of scrumptious cupcakes from Bella’s Cupcake World.
Shark Party Games and Activities
Exciting shark-themed party activities at the party included:
- shark diving in a plastic pool filled with blue squishy orbs instead of water
- painting ceramic sharks
- photo booth posing with a shark
Shark Party Favors
At the end of the day, Declan thanked his guests with favor boxes filled with sunglasses, stickers, tattoos, candy, and an inflatable beach ball. Just when you thought it was safe to go into the water, this shark-themed birthday party proves you don’t even need any water for a bodacious beach bash.
