Review RecipeIf You Give a Dog a Donut Puppy Birthday Party
Table of Contents
I am “paw-sitive” you will love this boy’s birthday party: If You Give a Dog a Donut. This darling puppy themed birthday party idea was styled and photographed by Toni Thomason, of Creative Designs by Toni, for her son’s 5th birthday.
Choosing a theme that reflects hobbies and/or interests of the guest of honor is so important and helps the planner (in this case, mom Toni) design an event that can truly bring joy.
Toni’s son is obsessed with puppies, so planning a puppy party was a natural choice. She opted to base the party around his favorite book, If You Give a Dog a Donut.
All of the decorations, the cake and treats tie back to the book and theme in such darling ways.

I love that Toni used the details from the book to create her dessert table display. If you’ve never read the book, it’s a darling tale about a dog that eats a donut and then becomes thirsty.
When his apple juice runs out, he decides to make his own by picking apples from a tree in the backyard.
This leads to many other outdoor adventures, like playing baseball and flying kites. Eventually, the story circles back to him needing a drink and then wanting a donut to go with it!
You can see these cute literary elements as part of the dessert table.
The backdrop itself looks like it could be a page right from the book! The apple tree and kite flying in the sky are such adorable accents. And isn’t the wooden fence such a perfect addition?
The glittered banner with the guest of honor’s name by The Purple Pug is such a cute touch.
Covered in faux grass, the table display includes many levels with yummy treats and appealing snacks. Colorful donut cookies, donut cupcakes and sprinkled donuts were creatively displayed.
I love how mini cupcake “donuts” were used as toppers for custom vinyl accented milk bottles.
Red and white polka dotted paper cups were filled with fresh strawberries and grapes and because little details add so much, Toni included a flag-topped toothpick in each fruit cup.
Apples and baseballs filled wire baskets to perfectly illustrate details from the book. Of course, the cake by Kimberly and Loren’s Sweet Treats, topped with custom wooden pegs by Craft that Party, were another sweet highlight of the table.
The birthday boy himself acted as storyteller and read the book to party guests. I love this idea! Perfectly chosen party favors included kites and baseballs that the guests could play with at home. If your little guy is a dog lover, a book loveror boththis party theme is sure to please!
