Never Think About What to Make for Dinner for the Next Two Months with My Lazy Cooking Bundle

Hey, there! My name is Layne. You’ll normally find me busy managing projects and blogging at Spaceships and Laser Beams… but today, I wanted to share my story with you.
Back in 2010, I was pregnant with my second son, and working full-time as a mortgage processor with a large bank. I was good at my job, but it was very stressful. I typically worked 60+ hours a week, often bringing work home.
Partway through my pregnancy, I was laid off because of restructuring and the downturn in the economy. It was quite a blow.
I became absolutely determined to change the course of my path and to stay home full-time moving forward.
Financially, this seemed completely impossible. But I knew there had to be a way.
I started pinching pennies and looking for ways to make money from home.
Within a few months, I had launched a blog. I started sharing tips for couponing and saving money and then started sharing DIY ideas and recipes. I really had no idea what I was doing, but I jumped in with both feet.
I was amazed that in a very short time, my ideas and stories were taking off and I had an audience beyond my family.
I discovered that I could make money off ads on my blog, as well as through affiliate sales. I was able to share items I loved with the audience I was growing, and earn money! It was a game-changer.
I was also freelance writing for others. That’s how I met Stephanie and became part of Spaceships and Laser Beams, where I now create content full-time.
Time passed, and I gave birth to a third son, and my online business continued to grow. I was staying home full time and providing a large chunk of my family’s monthly income — all while homeschooling an 8-year old and caring for a toddler and newborn.
I found out there was an incredible online community and network that I could be part of that would help me grow, and give me tools, information, and resources to thrive.
In 2013, I took a huge leap and traveled alone for the first time. My destination was Chicago to BlogHer 2013.
My goal was to connect with other bloggers, meet brands, and learn new information by attending the conferences. The entire event was non-stop for me — I moved from one conference to the next and made it a point to visit every vendor booth available.
I came home with tons of swag, a million memories, and loads of new information to start utilizing in my business. It marked the start of a real shift in my mindset and business as I realized what could be possible.
When I came home, I started implementing the ideas others had shared with me at BlogHer and became extremely intentional looking at this blogging “side gig” as a real, bonafide job. I continued to focus on setting goals and growing my vision.
The hard work kept paying off: I had amazing opportunities and the chance to completely change my family’s life.
The goals I had previously set for income seemed little at this point. What started as an extra $100 a month, turned into grocery money for the month, and then into paying the mortgage.
It became apparent to me that this blogging thing was completely life-altering.
Three years ago, I left an unhappy and unhealthy marriage. As I walked through the process of becoming a single mom, there were a lot of unknowns and fear.
But my job was never one of them.
Putting food on the table and a roof over our heads was never a fear. Do you know freeing that is?
I remember talking to Stephanie one night and sobbing in relief that my finances didn’t have me trapped in a relationship.
There are so many women that are trapped because of lack of resources.
I am eternally grateful that wasn’t me.
Because of blogging, I am able to provide for my kids, all while working at home, and being completely available for the needs of my boys.
Sick days and snow days don’t phase me. I don’t have to worry about calling in. I am able to drop them off and pick them up each day. I’m able to attend events.
Not only has blogging created an incredible day-to-day life for my family that I love, but it’s also opened up other opportunities that leave me speechless. I’ve traveled the world, representing amazing brands. I’ve created advertising campaigns for some of the largest corporations in the world.
Each day, I get to show and create content I’m proud of. I get to show my kids what strong looks like. I get to decide my destiny.
It’s life-changing. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done.
Last year, Stephanie and I headed to New York for BlogHer. As we took on the big city, surrounded by friends we’ve met through blogging, I realized just how far I’ve come in the last few years.
I don’t know if I could fully imagine it back in Chicago. And it makes me realize that even with my big dreams now, I probably don’t see how much is possible for the future. I am thrilled to see where we continue to go!
This year, the BlogHer19 Creators Summit is in New York again. You’ll find it September 18 and 19 at the Brooklyn Expo Center. It is the largest event for women content creators in the world! There is a reason they’ve found so much success and are now in their 15th year — the information and connections are priceless.

The event is packed with A-List Keynotes, Educational workshops, inspirational panel discussions, wellness and beauty activations and networking with top brands. You can find this year’s full BlogHer19 schedule here.
I’ve found that not only are sessions incredibly insightful and fun, the chance to speak with other peers who are doing the same thing as you is so enlightening. It’s priceless, really. You will walk away with new ideas of what is possible, new strategies, and new tools to help you get there.
Plus, you will make friends. Not only have I been so blessed to create an entire empire online, but some of my nearest and dearest friends also are from around the world and I’ve met them because of blogging.
