Today’s boy birthday party feature is the fireman themed dessert table I did for my son, Sam, for his third birthday. Last year we did a fishing themed birthday party because fishing is such an important part of our family life. But this year, a fire truck party was the way to go because Sam is obsessed with the idea of all things truck! Andrew designed a new Firefighting Fun Collection and it formed the basis for the feel of the party, the cake and cupcakes plus all of the decoration supplies. I’m thrilled with how it all came together.

The dessert table backdrop is an enlargement of our firefighting fun placemat. I like the way the black and grey figured fabric and the black border call attention to the firemen. I used subtle grey and white striped sheeting as a table covering that picks up the grey from the collection. The decorative paper covers empty boxes and it makes a great city scape to display cupcakes. The welcome sign with the official looking hook and ladder insignia works well for decorating a red and white striped bucket that holds favor bags of popcorn. Although they’re ready for some party time, meanwhile the birthday hats add a nice zing of color to the display.

When I asked Edible Details to provide hose nozzles so that I could make licorice fire hoses, we had no idea how it would work. They actually turned out to be one of my favorite things on the table.

I ordered this cake from a local shop, The Cake Box; they are fabulous to deal with. The flavor is called “The Elvis”. It is a combo of banana cake with peanut butter icing, supposedly a favorite of Elivs. It’s also because a favorite with my friends and me, too! To make the cake extra tall, a Styrofoam cake dummy was placed under the real cake and the entire thing waas covered in fondant.

The fondant cake tops — the fire truck and flames — were ordered from one of my favorite vendors, Edible Details. They did an amazing job of replicating the fire truck in our collection. I couldn’t have been more pleased.

The Cake Box also did these fire truck cupcakes. I love the exaggerated fondant lights on top of the cupcakes. They match our fire truck cupcake wrappers perfectly.

I had planned this table with the idea of using blue Jello in the buckets but ended up going with blue jelly beans instead. While the Jello would have looked more like water, I didn’t like the idea of eating it out of metal favor buckets. The flames behind the water buckets are cutouts from the napkin rings.

The little polymer Dalmatian and fire hydrant were purchased from Arts in Hand. I have ordered from her a couple of times now. She’s fantastic to deal with and the results of her handy work couldn’t be cuter!

I purchased the Dalmatian cookies from Sweeties by Kim. They’re actually sold as “cow print” cookies; shh! I refilled the plate twice and they were gone as quick as I had them out so I didn’t get to taste thembut I was told they were awesome.

Again, these fire house cupcakes were a bit of a team effort! Edible Details created the fondant fire flame cupcake toppers, the Cake Box created the cupcakes and we inserted it all into our fire house cupcake wrappers.

I really wanted to do something neat with the utensils so I came up with this packaging idea. It worked well and was used for the birthday BBQ as well as the dessert table.

The Firefighting Fun Collection has lots of amusing quirkiness that can be used in ways outside of the original intent. That’s another way to customize and make your own unique celebration. I think our firefighters are pretty hot stuff!
