You’ll need:

PRO TIP:

If you are worried about any of the ingredients in this cake, please check with your vet to make sure your dog can tolerate them.

For The Cake:

  • 2 eggs
  • ¼ cup of vegetable oil (or bacon grease)
  • ⅓ cup of unsweetened applesauce
  • ⅓ cup of creamy peanut butter
  • 1 carrot, grated
  • 1 banana, cut into small pieces
  • 2 tablespoons of honey
  • 1 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 1½ teaspoons of baking powder

PRO TIP:

If any ingredients are ones that your dog’s tummy can’t tolerate, you can substitute them for other options.

For The Frosting:

  • 2 cups of plain Greek yogurt
  • ¾ cup of creamy peanut butter (xylitol-free)
  • Box of dog bones

PRO TIP:

Dogs cannot eat peanut butter containing xylitol. Make sure you are using peanut butter that does not contain this ingredient.

Substitutions And Additions For A Dog Cake

PEANUT BUTTER: You could substitute peanut butter for any type of creamy nut butter you have (almond butter, cashew butter, etc.) at home for this simple birthday cake. It might make for a little different consistency, but the taste and overall outcome of this delicious treat will be the same.

DOG BONES: They are used more as a garnish, so you could choose to leave them off altogether or change the type of treat. To keep things homemade, you could also choose to make your own dog treats, using our delicious recipe!

FRUITS & VEGETABLES: Add in other dog-safe fresh fruits and veggies to change the taste for your birthday boy or girl! Sweet potatoes and pumpkin are two great options for your dog-friendly cake.

FLOUR: Some dogs can’t tolerate regular flour. Try almond flour, oat flour, brown rice flour, or coconut flour instead.

How To Make A Doggy Birthday Cake

Just like a human cake, this dog birthday cake involves making the cake batter before baking and adding the tasty frosting.

STEP ONE: Preheat the oven to 350°F. Spray cooking spray in two 6-inch round cake pans (these are smaller than normal cake pans). Then, line them with parchment paper on the bottom.

OUR RECIPE DEVELOPER SAYS

You can buy pre-cut parchment paper rounds to make lining the pans easier.

STEP TWO: In a large bowl, combine your eggs, oil, applesauce, creamy peanut butter, carrot, banana, and honey. Whisk the wet ingredients together until smooth.

STEP THREE: Add flour and baking powder to the bowl and mix the dry ingredients with a spoon. The mixture will be on the thick side.

STEP FOUR: Bake for 28 to 32 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean when inserted into the middle of the cake.

STEP FIVE: Cool the pan for 10 minutes, then remove and cool on a wire cooling rack. Let cool to room temperature before frosting the cake. If frosted too early, the “frosting” will melt.

STEP SIX: Once the cake is cooled, mix the plain yogurt and peanut butter in a medium bowl with a hand mixer until it is light and fluffy, about 3 to 5 minutes.

STEP SEVEN: Place the bottom layer of the cake on a serving dish and place a generous amount of frosting on top and spread it out to the edges.

STEP EIGHT: Layer the cake with the other piece and frost the top and sides of the cake. Place dog bones on top of the cake for decoration.

STEP NINE: Serve your cake immediately!

For the Greek Yogurt, Apple Sauce and Honey; should we be using Organic if we can ? Also, for the Greek Yogurt, should we use Non Fat or Whole Milk ?

I’m super excited to try this! Have you tried it in a 10inch round pan before and know how long it would need to cook in that? Thanks so much!!
